“Nobody likes you when your 23”
Well, Free Cake For Every Creature would disagree. “All You Gotta Be When You’re 23 Is Yourself” is a lovely quiet pop song that makes you nostalgic of the days spent writing in your diary in your childhood bedroom.
Where was this song when I was 23? Either way – 23 or 26 – this song can still be your self love anthem.
I caught up with FCFEC front lady, Katie Bennett, about the charming video for this super relatable tune.
Play Too Much: Why did you choose this song to make a video for?
Katie Bennett: I was inspired to write this song after watching Reality Bites, when Troy says to Laney, “All you gotta be when you’re 23 is yourself.” That’s maybe why the song has a dramatic/ cinematic feel to it, and I always imagined bringing that back around into a music video.
PTM: This is the perfect soundtrack song. Where was this video filmed? Give us an idea of the day(s).
KB: The song was filmed in two hours in my living room in March
PTM: How did you come up with the video concept?
KB: I wanted the song to be fun & colorful, and to be of mostly just us playing our instruments because we’ve never done that in a video before. The editor/ director Allyssa Yohana thought of everything else!
PTM: The beautiful pastel colors and hand drawn graphics make it so special. I want to live in this video! What was the hardest part and most fun part to film?
KB: The hardest part was just letting Allyssa do her thing because I like to get my hands into whatever project is associated with the band since it’s my baby. That being said, the most fun part was being able to step back, take some of the responsibility off my shoulders, and trust that Allyssa would make a beautiful video!
PTM: Who do you want to shout out for helping make this video possible?
KB: Allyssa Yohana!! She bought the props, set up the scene, filmed & edited, etc. She’s amazing. Also my bandmates for sticking it out, it was a hot afternoon!
