“Can’t Complain” is bluesy rock meets jackin’ house music. That’s what happens when you have homies with different musical interests coming together to make music. We jammed it out at my bedroom studio in a USC frat house. Natty Light was definitely an influence haha.
“Can’t Complain” says a lot about the process of collaborating. I’ve had to really step outside of my comfort zone to record vocals/guitar and to deal with verses, choruses and bridges, instead of just builds and drops. I didn’t want to inorganically force top lines on top of pre-made house tracks. Integrating these new elements into my productions has been one of the most creatively challenging endeavors I’ve ever tackled, but ultimately, I can’t complain because it’s been so much fun and so rewarding doing it all with my friends.
About Justin Jay: Over the course of his career, Justin Jay has cemented his name through a steady stream of celebrated releases, and eclectic DJ sets and live performances. With a handful of singles and EPs last year, including his Mom, I Graduated! EP on dirtybird and his Momentum EP on Catz ‘N Dogz’ Pets Recordings, Justin Jay furthered his credibility, while also playing shows on his first world tour that took him everywhere from Asia, to Europe, and across North America. Following the tour, he continued to challenge himself as he announced his cross-genre Justin Jay & Friends project in December. Rather than following the classic album release format on one label, Justin Jay is releasing Fantastic Voyage (The Album!) through a series of singles and EPs via different labels to reflect how distinctive the songs are from each other.
