Mariam The Believer: Winds EP

Mariam The Believer: Winds EP

By: Carlos Lima-Lopez

Mariam The Believer has dropped one of the most unique pieces of work I have heard. Sure it’s an appetizer, but it’s an appetizer that’s leaving me wanting  more of her music. Being a fan of her other band, Wildbirds and Peacedrums, this Icelandic singer has me officially sold. It’s off the wall and totally a trip, but this is a trip you definitely need to take.

First off, I want to comment on her voice. It’s utterly refreshing to hear someone so comfortable with their voice. She can belt those high notes, but, when she’s cool and relaxed, she still delivers solid impact. Her voice is bone chilling, but it’s lively.

What makes this EP so unique is its minimalist approach. It’s just Mariam singing with organs, piano, and synth providing the backbone of the rhythm. Yet, it’s such simplicity that awards the golden ticket. Personally, I love small and intimate experiences like this and honestly, it’s not very often that I find something like this. Sure, there are albums like Panda Bear’s “Young Prayer” and Omar Rodriguez Lopez’s “Ciencia de los Inutiles” that are treasures I hold very dear to me, and this one is being added to that list.

One of my favorite songs is “Wild is the Wind”, which feels cold and white. There’s also this really awesome oscillating synth in the middle that sounds sample worthy. Another favorite is “Black Mark” which is the most somber track on the EP. I imagine black snow falling in a small room, comfortably warm.

The EP feels like snow just coming down, but I love that feeling. I love watching it feel over cup of coffee and sitting there watch nature occur. If this EP is any indication, I feel Mariam the Believer will be a big player in the music scene. Grab your blanket!
