INTERVIEW: Jain

by Sara Waber

I first fell in love with Jain when I first heard her track “Makeba”. It’s impossible not to dance to. The rhythms are undeniably influenced by the many cultures Jain grew up surrounded by. From Toulouse to Dubai to the Congo and beyond, Jain’s 4 track EP, Hope, embodies these global sounds with a French twist.

Her track “Come” is just as mesmerizing. The bold cover EP art, a look we’ve come to associate with the singer/songwriter/beatmaker, who’s like a Wednesday Adams spider (Am I right?),  comes to life in this music video.  The video sends you on an Alice in Wonderland-esque optical illusion trip.

Play Too Much: Where are you from? What’s the music scene like there?

Jain: I’m from the south west of France. There’s a lot of great things happening here, in very different style so I’m really glad to live that…

PTM: Why did you choose “Come” to make a video for?

Jain: Because it’s one of the first song that I wrote when I was 16 in Congo. So this song marks the debut of this great  adventure.

PTM: Where was this video filmed? Give us an idea of the day(s).

Jain: This video was filmed in La maison Louis Carré designed by Alvar Aalto near Paris. This house is amazing and so graphic [that] it was great for the concept of this music video. We shot the video over two days, it was really fun.

PTM: How did you come up with the video concept?

Jain: I’m alone on stage with my machines and my guitar, so I came  up with this idea of a multitasking super hero that I drew for the cover of the EP. With this character, the concept was the multiplication and the visual games. We wanted to do something fun and esthetic. Greg and Lio are the video makers and they had tons of very cool and smart ideas, I loved working with them because they are very talented.

PTM: I love that! A multitasking superhero! The cover art is definitely bold and makes a statement. What was the hardest part and most fun part to film?

Jain: The hardest was maybe to jump in the coffee cup, it had to be the perfect angle. the most fun was also when I jumped into the coffee cup because I had a lot of fun on the trampoline.

PTM: Who do you want to shout out for helping make this video possible?

Jain: I want to thank Greg and Lio, my producer Maxim Nucci, my agent and my team from Columbia France who introduced me to Greg & Lio and all the team who worked on the set!!!
