The brand new Brooklyn-based record label Swoon City made a splash Thursday night at Genius (Rap Genius’ dedicated event space) debuting their first two signees, LA’s dream-pop outfit Blond Ambition, and NYC’s rising rocker Zuli. Both buzz-worthy bands slated to release LPs via Swoon City this year, an excited and enthusiastic crowd was treated to performances of unreleased material and old classics.

Blond Ambition’s Brian Harding (former frontman of the band Ex Cops) opted to swap his usual electronic arrangements for an upright bass player and drummer, as he sang and strummed along on an acoustic guitar. Harding’s songs, bare as they were, proved to be all the more durable with sparse accompaniment, despite the delicate facade.

Zuli, on the other hand, charged straight ahead, full-band in tow. Equal parts Zappa and Crenshaw, Ryan Camenzuli’s songs dwell in a sweet spot between the hallucinogenic and neatly buttoned, an unhinged ’70s inspired psychedelia teathered to earth by fine pop sensibilities and structure.

With both bands garnering significant buzz and boasting strong performances, it’s a safe assumption that the future of Swoon City will be bright. Here’s looking forward to seeing who they decide to sign next.
