INTERVIEW: THANKS Talks “Livin’ My Life”

by Chris Pizzolo

A few weeks back “Livin’ My Life” came across our desk. The track had a familiar hook and a vibrant video. The video and remix came from a group known as THANKS. The duo behind Alphabeat created a groovy single that samples Jill Scott’s “Golden” and couples it with a funky feel good video directed by Jesse Flemming. We spoke with the duo about the video and how it came about.

Play Too Much: Alright guys, so tell us a little bit about the song?

Anders SG: We stumbled upon an acapella for Jill Scott’s “Golden” on youtube. We didn’t know the original song but to us the vocal sounded like a hook for a disco song. So we finished “Livin’ My Life” before listening to Jill Scott’s version which is superb btw. It’s kind of our take on contemporary house like “Need U (100%)” and “I Got U” by Duke Dumont. At the same time we have a chopped up, funky Nile Rodgers inspired vibe going on.

PTM: The funky elements of Nile Rodgers are definitely present! How did you come up with the video concept?

Anders SG: We wanted to make a simple video with a person dancing through our favorite spots of L.A. We came across a video of Taveaus “DynaMc” Woods doing his next level dance moves and thought he looked like he was living his life, it was golden. He was totally up for it and then we got director Jesse Fleming to film it and he has really done a brilliant job.

PTM: Amazing. The  video looks like it was so much fun to make. Where was this video filmed?

ASG: The video was filmed around Santee Alley in Downtown LA. We love being in LA, from Malibu to Eagle Rock, and Downtown really has a vibe we like. So to be able combine that with Taveus’s dancing was amazing for us.

PTM: You guys definitely captured the LA/ California vibe. I’m curious, what was the hardest part and most fun part to film?

ASG: We were not a part of the filming process because we were too busy, so the difficult part was to email back and forth with Jesse while he was editing the video to make sure everything was perfect.

PTM: Crazy to think that you were able to have so much trust in the process. Who do you want to shout out for helping make this video possible?

ASG: Taveaus “DynaMc” Woods, Jesse Fleming and Torben Ravn from Copenhagen.
