The Soul Rebels, Three Days of Soul and Brooklyn Bowl

The Soul Rebels, Three Days of Soul and Brooklyn Bowl

The New Orleans brass ensemble The Soul Rebels began their three day stint at Brooklyn Bowl last night with special guests (each night will be different) Afrika Bambaataa, Pharoahe Monch, and Black Thought.

The night began with Afrika Bambaataa’s DJ set. He seamlessly spun hits from James Brown to M.O.P. I had many moments of “Ooohh no he didn’t!” after he’d cut up and drop the next beat. It didn’t take him long to get a stagnant crowd moving like the Brooklyn Bowl was just a front for a underground dance club.

After Afrika’s set The Soul Rebels took the stage with the light completely down. Then, synced with their first blaring note the lights turned up and marked the start of a non-stop groove that could even be felt during their breaks between songs. With their ability to lead call and responses, and get the crowd to dance, The Soul Rebels turned Brooklyn Bowl into a communal gathering of music.
To top off their their set, Pharaohe Monch came on and rapped over The Soul Rebels renditions of “Bad Mother Fucker,” and “Simon Says.” Everyone was yelling the choruses in unison, and Pharoahe couldn’t help missing some lyrics in his laughter and excitement towards the crowds reaction. Black Thought of The Roots came out next and he performed the throwbacks “The Next Movement,” and “You got me.” The Soul Rebels brought a fresh and explosive take on songs I’ve listened to thousands of times.

There are two more nights to catch the Soul Rebels at Brooklyn Bowl and their special guests include Rakim and DJ Enuff. Get there early because it’s likely to sell out.
