Jill Lamoureux of Scavenger Hunt Talks “River Runs Dry”

“It Felt Like We’d Only Released The Tip of the Iceberg That is Our Sound”

by Jill Lamoureux of Scavenger Hunt

I’m always listening. Music, words and phrases will catch my ears, and sometimes they stick with me. Our friend and collaborator James used the phrase “river runs dry” and it kept running through my head. When writing songs, I love to use natural elements (like water, air, heat, etc.) as metaphors and to describe emotions.

The idea of not giving in until the “river runs dry,” to me, is drive. It symbolizes not giving up on something you love, such as a dream, a person, an idea. When writing this EP, Dan and I were in a much different place than at the start of Scavenger Hunt as a musical project.

We have had high highs and definitely some lows, toured all over the US, heard our music on TV, in movies, and commercials and what we realized, is that we’re just getting started. It felt like we’d only released the tip of the iceberg that is our sound. The theme of our writing quickly and naturally became about strength and perseverance. We felt stronger as writers, as performers and as production partners.

We were listening to a lot of Peter Gabriel’s classic and brilliant album, “So,” INXS (a personal favorite), new albums by Chairlift and The 1975. Our ongoing obsession with the epic drums and rhythm of Tribe Called Quest are always a huge inspiration. “River Runs Dry” being the first release from this EP, is a track we’re particularly proud of for its strength and musical growth for Scavenger Hunt as a band.
