Album Review: Heart Attack Man Releases EP ‘Thoughtz & Prayerz’

Heart Attack Man Thoughtz & Prayerz
Words by: Art Wall

Heart Attack Man has released their highly anticipated EP Thoughtz &Prayerz. Following on the bootstraps of their previous albums The Manson Family and Fake Blood, their new EP is no exception to their hardcore roots and in your face lyrics. The band integrates themes of salivation, life, death, and sacrifice into this body of work; Thoughtz & Prayerz will be a soundtrack to worship to. Described by the band as “piping hot” and “chaotic” this EP is one they “cranked all the knobs on.

Originally formed in 2013 in a “botched exorcism,” their first demo and EP Acid Rain came shortly after alongside Mayfly Records. Their blunt lyrics and pop punk beats quickly gained them regional acclaim.

Given their track record, it comes as no surprise that this latest 5 track EP with Triple Crown Records is packed full of punchy, subversive lyrics that poke fun at the running themes that are too often seen in pop punk today. Made up of singer Eric Egan, bassist Logan McNeal, drummer Adam Paduch, and guitarist Ty Sickles, the band tackles issues head on, confronting topics of self-hatred, anger, disgust, and betrayal, all issues too often avoided amongst male-lead bands, and a refreshing set to downright wicked beats.

Heart Attack Man takes their inspiration from acts ranging from Pantera to The Beastie Boys, walking the line between hardcore punk and poppy emo sound. The ideas addressed in their songs come with humor, disdain, intellect, and a whole lot of attitude. The EP starts off strong with the track “Puke,” lined with sludgy riffs, fast paced drums, and lyrics that are totally ‘sick’. Following is their title track, challenging the beliefs of religion and the platitudes so often associated with them, an attitude carried throughout their entire ep and coats every note. A sobering yet lighthearted song, “Cool 2 Me” jumps out and explores the condescending ways women are spoken to when bringing to light abusers in ‘the scene,’ a take avoided by most punk bands, but not the feisty and scrappy Heart Attack Man. One rarely accompanied by a now-streaming music video, Pitch Black “is a story of growth being braced by the past — standing in the face of yesterday’s tribulations and not letting them hold equal power over the present — truly being in X-Games mode with your emotions and shit.”

Heart Attack Man’s presence reaches far and wide; Egan keeps their name on the radar through Twitter and TikTok where the band has gained a large following of devoted fans highly anticipating the Thoughtz & Prayerz release. For this EP, the band will be touring across the U.S. alongside Neck Deep where they will be “performing services” starting Nov. 4th in Nashville. On the heels of the EP’s drop, it’s a performance that no one will want to miss
