Didi + Ping Drops Mesmerizing New House Jam “Pharaoh”

The Asian-Canadian producer has a fresh new dance tune with an eclectic origin

Up and coming electronic artist Didi + Ping channels classic lo-fi house sounds reminiscent of pioneering European dance acts like Deadmau5 and Porter Robinson in their latest single, “Pharaoh.” “Pharaoh” marks the third single of this budding career, and serves to plant Didi + Ping’s feet firmly in the electronic/experimental scene as a singularly-focused artist who genuinely cares about detail and technicality. It’s evident on “Pharaoh” that Didi + Ping has a true passion for conducting novel electronic sounds in a cohesive, classically-minded fashion. Mixing his talent as a multi-instrumentalist with a serious intuition for music production, every lo-fi movement and dynamic shift that “Pharaoh” seeks to achieve is fully released here; a fitting addition to the artist’s growing catalogue of instrumental soundscapes.

In addition to his appreciation for dance music and musicality, Didi + Ping has a distinct love for the natural world that isn’t always common in the house music scene, a genre very much overwhelmed with artists inspired by night life and energetic indoor venues, this fledgling producer approaches the genre from an entirely new perspective, channeling his inspiration in records that tonally tend to stray away from many of the overplayed tendencies of the EDM genre, such as stagnant chord progressions and a notable absence of organic instrumentation. Granted, this is still dance music, meant to create a vibe more than sell a listener on a message or idea, but “Pharaoh” paints Didi + Ping as an artist with one foot planted in the ways of traditional musicianship just as much as the typical tropes of electronic production; a pretty cool dichotomy indeed, in other words.

The artist otherwise known as Kristian Wang selected the moniker Didi + Ping as a tribute to his family and Chinese heritage, with Didi being the Mandarin word for “younger brother” (of which he is one) and Ping being his Chinese namesake. Bringing his unique influences to electronic music, the young artist has begun to shape his sound on the strength of his three songs released thus-far, “Buffalo Jump,” “Take Flight,” and now “Pharaoh.” Didi + Ping definitely has potential, and fans of house and dance music whose tastes might include some more traditional piano instrumentals definitely should be sure to keep an eye on the fledgling producer.
