Progressive-punk band Frontside have kicked off their 2021 with a brand new EP, Closer to Closure. This North Carolina based group has been producing punk bangers since their inception in 2008. They bring garage band punk to a whole new level with their impressive technical skills. Their fantastic instrumentals, strong vocals, and air of rebellion make them the perfect punk group. Closer to Closure features five tracks that were written before their first full-length release, giving it the perfect mix of their past and their future as a band.

Closer to Closure starts out with a modern punk anthem titled Give It Up.” With an extended intro showing off the band’s instrumental talent and gravelly vocals, it is quintessential punk. The quick-beat drum line is an absolute standout- giving the track its hard-hitting quality. Give It Up is not only a phenomenal way to start an album, but a great way to begin a live set as well.

Smith brings the guitar line to the forefront and takes on a heavier tone than its predecessor. It feels like a B track on a 90’s punk album in the best way. It’s followed by their previously released single Einstein Killed Me. An honest track about a significant break up, Einstein Killed Me has a more pop-punk influence than the rest of the EP. However, this factor makes this track the perfect vibe for the middle of the album.

Take Heed follows, driving the album back to its heavier roots with force. The jagged guitar line and hard-hitting drums are what give Take Heed its edge. The vocals are on display in this track, their smooth, light quality contrasting perfectly with the chaotic instrumental.

Monstro closes out the album with more pop-punk influences. The song has a great progression from a lighter pop-punk to a heavier punk purely from the drum line. This track brings the EP full circle- focusing more on the instrumental just like Give it Up. Frontside certainly knows how to shine the spotlight on their talented instrumentalists.

Overall, Frontside has produced a technically impressive album while still maintaining their rebellious punk edge. The heavy metal influences give the EP a darker edge that will certainly appeal to true punk fans. However, the balance between the heavier and more pop-punk inspired tracks is perfect. It’s safe to say that old and new fans will find something to love about Closer to Closure.
