EP REVIEW: MOONZz Unveils New EP ‘MODERN RITUAL’

Rising pop singer/songwriter MOONZz [aka Molly Williams], who independently accumulated over 50 million streams on Spotify, unveiled her new EP Modern Ritual 6 via Big NoiseModern Ritual was inspired by everything that makes MOONZz the artist and person she is, and the rituals we practice that make us who we are. A California native, MOONZz broke out in 2016 — influenced by a diverse group of artists that includes Eliot Smith, Air, Death Cab for Cutie, and Daedalus, and her rich, R&B-suited vocals offer a perfect counterpoint to her melodic interpretations and catchy trap beats.

Modern Ritual begins with a short, slithery intro “Better” that sets the tone for the EP, finding yourself and not letting anything get in the way of that journey. The next track, “What It’s Like,” has a stoked instrumental mid-section, paired with her passionate, soulful vocals. Never sticking to a specific genre, MOONZz’s music is a healthy mix of all things pop, with classical stylings and hints of electronic beats. “Runnin’,” tells a story of the perseverance of two women who escape the restraints of emotionally difficult situations that were holding them back and fight for what they rightly deserve. MOONZz shows this through her entrancing vocals, touching on themes of struggle and pushing through when outside forces are trying to hold you back. MOONZz recently dropped a music video for her single “Runnin’,” which was lifted from the EP before its release. She says the song is for anyone who has ever felt undervalued or belittled. It’s an uplifting journey flowing through your ears with the lyrics “I’ve been cut down like a diamond / Trying to, trying to move with the lightning / Always been quick on my toes follow where the chaos goes / Not keeping, up but I’m trying.” The last four songs, “Battles,” “Love Myself,” “Modern Ritual,” and “Found You” take the listener on a trip of finding oneself through persistence and self-respect.
