The lo-fi pop genre has gained newfound popularity this year, leading the way for some incredible artists to emerge. One of these artists is 15-year old Irish singer Patricia Lalor — and with the release of her new EP today, you will not want to sleep on this one.

This Is How We Connect, While You Stand So Tall is a four-track EP featuring two of Patricia’s most recent singles. She starts off with “This Man Thought He Saved Me” — the lead single from the EP. The brooding indie track features dissonant synth undertones paired with her haunting vocals. The powerful lyrics look to call out those who don’t stand up for what they believe as she sings, “You can change/I can’t make you change.” The release came with a music video filmed from Patricia’s home — moody and dark in aesthetic with bursts of color, the creative stylings bring out a true alternative style making this a brilliant leading track.

“To Cope” follows on the EP and debuted just after Thanksgiving. The track presents a darker tone than “This Man Thought He Saved Me”, yet still featuring her dream-like vocals. “To Cope” has a more solemn, trace-like feel — utilizing a hypnotic, driving beat and tight-knit harmonies to give the track its dizzy and entrancing feel. The lyrics tell a story about someone who is searching for ways to cope with the problems they’re facing, adding to the hazy and dissonant effect of the track.

Right on the heels of the previously released singles is a new track, “Same Place Again.” An immediate stand-out, “Same Place Again” has a definitive indie sound that sets it apart from the rest of the EP. She trades in the hypnotic synth tones for contrasting guitar lines that give a whole new vibe to her signature vocals. The remaining track is fittingly titled, “Felt Something Finally” and showcases yet another twist on Patricia’s usual sound. With a driving beat and static effect, “Felt Something Finally” is a pensive track that listeners will feel in their bones.

Patricia certainly caught everyone’s attention this year with three original EPs and a multitude of lo-fi gems. This Is How We Connect, While You Stand So Tall is a phenomenal display of her talents and highlights a preview of the incredible things we’ll see her do in 2021.
