EP REVIEW: The Blinders Return With ‘ELECTRIC KOOL-AID’

Doncaster-born Indie rockers The Blinders have returned with brand new EP Electric Kool-aid (Part 1). With psychedelic Indie rock mixed with emotional weight, this EP is the way to kick off your 2022.
Kicking off their EP with its title track, The Blinders pull you in with echoing guitar riffs and electronic vocals. It’s almost as if the band is attempting to abduct you and take you with them into a new universe full of psychedelia. Leading into “Barefoot Across Your Water,” the band’s charisma shines in this track with soft acoustic sounds and romantic vocals. With 80s new wave vibes of melodic harmonies, there’s no way you could skip this track. The lyrics, “I’ll be barefoot across your water,” alone are enough to hook you.
Continuing with psychedelic-fused rock sounds, previously released single “City We Call Love” incorporates vigorous melodies and screeching guitar-driven tracks. In between thundering verses tells a story about a “city we call love.” The track’s music video is truly one of a kind offering dark and mysterious aesthetics while embracing the spirit of the song. Vocalist/guitarist Thomas Haywood speaks on the track, “Love is an enormous feeling and something I’d never felt up until this point. The music tries to match the weight of that while holding its hand with the lyrics.”
Heading into “The Writer,” the track holds sounds of The Blinders influences such as IDLES and Arctic Monkeys. With attitude-centered vocals, crisp guitar riffs and heavy bass-lines, the band dives deep into punk rock territories with this track. “The Writer” holds political frustration and explores how to eat the rich. “Hate To See You Tortured” closes it out and features The Blinders’ more romantic side with emotional lyrics and a more relaxed tone overall. The track stands out from the rest of the EP due to its calm vibe and serenading end.
With over 50,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, The Blinders have already made a name for themselves in the rock world. Their previous LP from 2020 Fantasies Of A Stay At Home Psychopath showed us the softer side of the band, they’ve clearly matured with their music since. The Blinders have convinced us to open our minds and be optimistic when exploring new music. The Blinders’ Electric Kool-aid (Part 1) was positively an intense ride and we’re thrilled to hear Part 2!
