EP REVIEW: The Wrecks Release Four New Stand-Out Tracks With EP ‘STATIC’

The Alt-Rock Band’s New EP deserves its own spotlight

The Wrecks EP Review

The Wrecks Following the success of their recent full-length album, alt-rock band The Wrecks has just released their new EP, Static. Originally planned to be tracks on the deluxe edition of their latest album, Infinitely Ordinary  — the EP features four new tracks. About the new EP, frontman Nick Anderson shared, “We originally wanted to release a deluxe version of our album Infinitely Ordinary, but oftentimes deluxe tracks get snubbed a bit and we didn’t want that to happen to these songs. So we decided to give them their own release, and an opportunity to reach more people.”

This explosive EP opens with the title track and lead single, “Static” —an upbeat alt-rock gem with electro-pop elements. With an infectious melody and incredible vocals, “Static” is a must-have for any jam-out playlist. The chorus is catchy with sentiments of longing and wishing you could forget about the one who’s unforgettable.

The second track quickly becomes the stand-out on the record. “I Hope It’s Cold In New York” comes forward with more of an indie rock vibe, that features a passive-aggressive message to someone you wish you never met. The chill, summertime tone is an ironic pairing for the somewhat angry lyrics. With both acoustic and electric guitars paired with a lo-fi piano element, “I Hope It’s Cold In New York” is a brilliantly written track with great acoustic release potential.

“Good For Nothing” follows, seemingly combining tones from both the first and second tracks. Chill, indie rock verses are separated by more electric, intense choruses. As usual, the vocals are stellar, and acoustic and electric elements are a great pairing. The harmonies become the stand-out element, as well as the juxtaposition with the verses and chorus.

The project closes out with “Try To Remember” — a touching ballad that puts Anderson’s true vocal talent on display. Backed only by an acoustic guitar line and a piano, his smooth vocals and nostalgic lyrics are all the more powerful. There is a slight build to the instrumental that matches the building emotion in both the lyrics and vocals. The sole ballad on the EP — “Try To Remember” is tragically beautiful and an absolute masterpiece from the band.

Static is an incredible piece of work from The Wrecks. With each release, the band gets better and better. It’s safe to say that their future is bright and we can’t wait to see what they’ll come up with next.
