It’s a far stretch from Ocean Avenue.

William Ryan Key Everything Except Desire
Words By: Bethany Hildebrandt

Former Yellowcard frontman William Ryan Key explores new heights and sounds with his latest EP Everything Except Desire. The new EP is his third solo one since 2018’s Virtue. Key began producing Everything Except Desire on his own in Summer 2020 and initially released it to his Patreon members only. After receiving such an amazing response to what he gave fans, William then called in Erich Talaba, Ryan Mendez [former Yellowcard guitarist] and Mike Kalajian for mixing and mastering. With a new approach to diverse instruments and electronic tracks, you’ll be entering a universe you never even knew existed.

Everything Except Desire begins with “The Swim Track,” producing mesmerizing keyboards, making you feel like you’re walking through an aquarium. The track then picks up with a repetitive beat and presents orchestral sounds that welcome you with open arms. Previously released single “Face In A Frame” brings charismatic energy into the EP experimenting with instruments as well as expressing emotion and confusion in lyrics.

Continuing with a memorable bassline, “Brighton” features self-analyzing lyrics that will have you extending your frame of mind. Key states on the track, “I think this song is a manifestation of my desire to set myself free from the constraints of what I’ve created in the past.” With celestial synths and electronic reverb, William Ryan Key will take you to another universe with this track.

Traveling into “Heavens,” we’re brought to a refining track with a desire of ‘letting go.’ Along with ethereal vibrations and beautiful alluring vocals, it’s the song you’ll be driving into nowhere with. Capturing the lighter tone of the EP, you’ll find yourself getting pleasantly lost within this track. “Union Chapel” closes it out and reminds us of the emotional strength Key has gained by breaking away from normal expectations of his music. Although the track is downhearted and merciful, the magical tones of piano riffs and string instruments will have you feeling at ease. Key’s ending lyrics symbolize the mood of the EP by fading out and will leave you craving more from the gifted artist.

Everything Except Desire presents a diverse story from beginning to end with electric vibrations, melodious vocals and captivating lyrics. Although William Ryan Key is forever grateful for his experience with Yellowcard, he fears no creative risks when it comes to crafting his own sound. We’re thrilled to see what’s next from him!
