Cory Becker– singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist- is about to drop his debut album One, but not before he gives listeners a preview of his work. Having written and produced the album himself, Becker explored multiple variations of sounds, techniques and production as he performed nearly every aspect of the album himself. One is set to drop February 21.
The album is described as embracing the authenticity and experimentation of analog recording. Becker engineered and produced this album himself, with the help of musical guests he invited to play on a select few tracks – he was able to create a unique-sounding album. He created a modern, indie-rock and folk album that encompasses the values and traditions of American music.
The first track from the album that Becker released is called “Haunt” which features artist Jade Castrinos. Having been released on Halloween, 2019, this track embraces the spooky feel, and the haunting feeling of the presence of someone who is no longer there. Lyrics “I love you, now you’re gone / Is it so wrong to believe in a lie if it makes you feel how you want / Can I ask you to give me that place in your mind that you know I haunt” further describes the haunting feeling of a past love, missing them but knowing you are better off without them.
The second track from the album, “Rivers”, debuted mid-December of last year and deals with fearing the unknowable future with a partner. “‘Rivers’ is a song I wrote to a person I was in a relationship with, who struggled with fear and uncertainty of the future, and our future specifically,” Becker says simply. “The track is inspired by a basic sentiment: You cannot stop what will be, so let it happen, whatever it is.” “Rivers” is a more folk-y track. His voice’s raspy yet smooth, giving the lyrics the certain feel of loving someone who is afraid of what the future holds.
Becker’s most recent track, “The Preacher,” was released January 28, and it lets listeners trek into his past and present self. Being a vulnerable record, this song reflects off of the strict religious life he grew up living, “I needed a father and I got a policeman instead / I needed a mother and I got a preacher instead.” Song of saving himself from that environment, recovering and filling himself with more positive energy after the traumatic life that was his childhood. Becker turned all his negative experiences and energy into creative artistry
