The first seven seconds of the music video shows a hooded figure’s white shoe literally stepping on the scene. The white sneaker belongs to blooming New York pop rapper, Drama Relax (Also Known as John Sammis). He has released the music video and song “Ghost” on May 29, under Rule #1/Geffen Records.
The song incorporates melodic singing over bubbly high hats and thumping 808’s. The overall length of the track doesn’t even scrape two minutes. The main point of Sammis’s songwriting revolves around him winning and being on top. “Being away from the people who matter the most to me during quarantine has made me realize how close I need to keep my loved ones and how I need to remove any negative energy that might be around me.” said Sammis. The video directed by Francis also has a charm to it using different cuts of footage to the beat and various moving/aerial shots of him on a New York City rooftop and someone’s garden next to their house.
Being a Long Island native Sammis carries that with him when he creates his music. “Having where I’m from carry me throughout my music process is really what gives me my motivation right out of recording in my bedroom,” says Drama Relax. He started to make music when he was in the eighth grade because he was inspired by Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III. After honing in on his craft all of high school to build an audience, release some mixtapes, and sell instrumentals he makes online. Sammis eventually got the attention of Interscope Geffen A&M Executive Vice President Joie Manda, which later led to him signing with Interscope in the fall of 2018. It is said that he used to go by the name Johnny Drama but then after being picked up by a label he changed his stage name to be Drama Relax.
Drama Relax originally hit mainstream appeal when he released the song “All That” featuring Jeremih. It was most prominently on the soundtrack of the third season of the Netflix hit show 13 Reasons Why. The track (at the time this was written) has garnered a little over 4.6 million streams on Spotify and roughly 1.4 million on Youtube. The last track that Sammis has released was last month and it was titled “Karate”. A track about Sammis swiping a girl off her feet. Shortly after he released the song “Potency” which surpassed 378 thousand Youtube views in a little under a month.
