3 reimagined tracks from their debut LP ‘Scumbag’

Five North and Friends Trippy Listenings (Scumbag Remixes) album review

Last week pop-punk act, Five North nonchalantly changed their Facebook cover photo to the boys draped in fuchsia with the words “Trippy Listening By Five North Friends” ever so casually placed neatly next to our beloved Five North. By the end of the night, fans were given a 15-second clip of a reimagined “Whiskey Breath” from their debut LP Scumbag.

These posts of course threw fans into a tailspin since this is the first original content Five North have posted since April. Riding the high of their March release – Five North put out exclusive merch, rode the press circuit and it looked like the punk trio was gearing up for an announcement of shows. But with the devastating hit of Covid-19, the music world came to a screeching halt. With the sounds of Scumbag on repeat, fans grew restless waiting to hear from their new favorite pop-punk band – but on July 10, those deafening demands for more were finally silenced.

Last Friday Five North unveiled Trippy Listenings (Scumbag Remixes) – the mini drop features 3 reimagined tracks, each at the hands of Five North and Friends. “Whiskey Breath” became remixed by Five North as a collective – slowing down the beat of this ballad-esque ever so slightly and giving it a more dreamlike feel. At the break down though, “Whiskey Breath” gets a funkier uptake that’s reminiscent of the days of Myspace – while “Same Old Story” – remixed by frontman, Tyler Posey – becomes an electric dance break down. “Same Old Story” becomes an echo within itself mixed with an array of classic techno synths before ending with a robotic rendition of its closing monologue. The final remastered track is Scumbag’s opener, “Drunk Cat” – this energetic upbeat tune gets slowed down at the hands of Bret James creating an entirely new story.  This once fast-paced journey of getting the hell out of dodge becomes a moment of reflection – a moment to think about what happened within the relationship and process. While the original features more of an abrupt end with a fade to black – the Drunk Cat” remix echoes within itself “So I’ll be getting drunk, I’ll be getting stoned/I’ll be getting pissed with my friends.”

The reimagines tracks definitely give more range to Five North’s original release. While there is no word yet on whether or not the rest of the LP will face a similar makeover, you can enjoy the first installment Trippy Listenings (Scumbag Remixes) below.
