We are finally saying goodbye to 2020. It’s no secret that 2020 has arguably been one of the worst years in modern history. From a deadly pandemic that has affected all of us in many different way to killer bees and wild fires — 2020 has not been a friend to many. However, even with the worst of the worst, there’s often at least a few great moments that trickled behind. Which is why we asked some of your favorite artists, despite 2020 housing some of the worst moments, what’s the best thing that’s happened to you? Kevin Daniel, We Were Sharks, Eliza & The Delusionals, Good Bison, DECOUPLR, Stefan Alexander, Dust Bowl Faeries and The Buckleys share their 2020 highlights.
Eliza Klatt [Eliza & the Delusionals]: “I think being at home has been tough, but it’s also given us a chance to refresh and take care of ourselves. I think it’s so easy to burn out without even realizing when everything is moving fast. It’s also given us time to build a studio at home and really focus on writing and recording which is a lot harder to do when you’re traveling or on tour!”
Good Bison: “The best thing to come out of 2020 for me is getting back in the studio. It has been a long time since I’ve worked on new music, and I’d forgotten just how much I love it. With this project in particular I feel like I’ve been able to craft a unique sound that’s true to who I am and also incorporates the genres and styles that have inspired me. Getting to work with Slightly Stoopid producer George Spits was absolutely incredible, and also for the first time in my life I’m as excited about how I’m presenting this new project as I am about how it sounds, thanks to the Visual Direction of Krölhaus.”
Dust Bowl Faeries: “Filming our ‘Candy Store’ video with Lisa M. Thomas of Thin Edge Films was the highlight of the year, for sure. It was intense, and hot (August), a little bit terrifying, but everyone really appreciated, more than ever, the opportunity to come together and make some magic after so many months of isolation. The video was filmed in support of our new album, The Plague Garden, which was another pandemic surprise. I had literally just finished telling the band that we would not be recording anytime soon when the plague rolled in, and like so many other musicians, what else could we do but get to work on a new album?”
Bailey Walker [DECOUPLR]: “2020 has brought more interaction with the people in our social circles! Adam keeps up with friends all over the map through online Dungeons and Dragons, and I’ve been hosting a virtual trivia night with my friends once a week. It has been a really entertaining way to catch up and stay connected, I think we’re all making an effort to spend more time together this year because we’re inside and have more availability. It’s certainly a bright spot in an otherwise dreadful year.”
Jason Mooney [We Were Sharks]: “From a band perspective, a great thing that has happened to us has been prepping to release our new album. We’ve been able to take time, breathe, think clearly and give it every bit of effort that it gets the release it deserves. From a personal perspective, I was concerned that it would be a very long, uncertain amount of time until I could go home and visit my family. I’m from an isolated island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean called ‘Newfoundland.’ They put up major travel restrictions allowing next to no one to travel to the island. I was granted an exemption and, after two weeks of self-isolating, I got to spend a month and a bit with my family — which is the longest time I’ve got to be with them in over eight years!”
Despite 2020 not being able to make all our wildest dreams comes true, don’t forget to celebrate all the victories 2020 made you fight for – no matter how small. If this year has taught us anything it’s that every good thing that happens to you deserves to be celebrated, because we truly never know what tomorrow holds for us. To all the nurses, doctors, EMT/paramedics, first responders, frontline and essential workers, thank you for everything you’ve sacrificed, done, continue to do for all of us. To those who have lost a loved one, is suffering or knows someone suffering due to the mayhem that this pandemic has caused — our hearts and love are with you. Stay safe, wear a mask and remember to tell everyone important to you that you love them.
