INTERVIEW: SZNS Talk Music, Empowerment And What They Have Planned For The Future

The latest pop power group introduce us to who they really are & the impact they hope their music will create

szns interview

Vibrant girl-group SZNS are putting their unique twist on the classic 90’s girl group. All four members bring their own unique vibe and vocals that aim to spark conversation about the societal pressures women are facing. From being a woman to being in the LGBTQ+ community, SZNS are tackling it all.

Most recently, the group released their single Behave — an upbeat dance track with EDM undertones and a hard hitting message backed by a Latin beat. It’s the kind of track that would make any girl want to get up, dance, and celebrate themselves. That’s exactly what the girls are aiming to do- empower young girls to be themselves and to not apologize for that. Winter, Summer, Autumn, and Spring are open and unapologetic about their experiences throughout the pandemic, with LGBTQ+ issues, and with their process as artists.

We got the chance to speak with SZNS to get an in-depth look into who they are and what they hope their music will do for women and young voices.

PTM: let’s start with introductions.
SZNS: Hi, I’m Spring! Pleased to meet you. Hey I’m Summer! What’s up, it’s Winter ❄️ Autumn!
PTM: What led to the creation of SZNS? And what is the overall agenda of the group?
Summer: We all auditioned for the group around a year ago after realizing how much we had to offer as a group as opposed to individuals.
Autumn: I think our agenda is to create space for women to be themselves whoever that may be. If someone feels a little more hyped up before an important meeting on her drive to work because she’s listening to SZNS — that’s what I’m TALKIN about.
PTM: All of you are wildly talented in your own right. What would you say defines each of you as your own artist/person and how do you utilize that to come together to create music?
Summer: Thanks so much! I feel like every lyric I write or sing is very unique to me as my own artist in the group, and the same goes for the other girls. We all have such different tones and styles but when it comes all together it makes SZNS what it is.
Winter: Summer said it perfectly! Each of us has had such different life experiences that allow us to explore so many avenues with our music. Writing is really our safe space, which allows us to get super vulnerable and make something that feels right.
PTM: Let’s talk about your recent single, “Behave”, that has an empowering message. With a market that’s quickly becoming saturated by this theme, what led/inspired you to create another banger to add to the mix of women driven powerhouse singles?
Summer: We knew we wanted to make a song about how good it feels being unapologetically yourself as a woman in this day in age so we did!
Winter: We are sick of being treated like fragile beings that can’t do anything for ourselves. Our mommas taught us to be bold and we want to share that with anyone who needs to hear it!
PTM: Can you share a little bit about your writing process, not only with “Behave” but for your music in general?
Summer: We always start with a conversation about anything going on in our lives. Between the four of us someone definitely had something juicy happen that we can draw from.
Winter: And to go off Summer, we then might listen to a beat, or guitar riff and start coming up with melodies that match our lyrics.
PTM: There’s no doubt Covid had a huge impact on the music industry, how has the pandemic affected each of you, not only personally, but creatively?
Summer: I try to always look on the bright side, and I think the lockdown really allowed us to come together as a group and be as intimate with our work as possible.
Winter: We really got to focus on our work and then move forward even stronger. I definitely felt a little “writer’s block” due to not being able to go places and see people, but with the girls by my side, we all got through it together and put that into our music.
PTM: Is there any 1 change that Covid it has presented that more so negatively affects how you create or present your music then the rest?
Winter: I wouldn’t say Covid negatively affected how we create our music, since it did cause us to look inward. But as for how we present our music, yes, we definitely had to think outside the box. When we would usually be going to radios and performing, now we are connecting through social media.
Autumn: Pre-Covid I never would’ve known the impact of TikTok! Since we had to find a way to connect to listeners outside of the traditional touring/meeting in person we had to get super creative with socials.
PTM: It has been mentioned that you all live together, has that presented any challenges? Do you think that living together allows you to have a greater creative energy that helps the group more so than groups who live separately?
Summer: I think it allowed us to get to know each other on a more personal level. We not only became best friends but these girls are like sisters to me.
Winter: 100% Summer! We really know how each of us flow and that gives us so much leverage because we can’t practically read each other’s minds at this point haha!
Autumn: I do not understand how these women can live with the AC on so cold. It truly baffles me. They have turned me into a popsicle. Please send help.
Spring: It definitely helps! We are such a great team Bc living together helps you to really get to know each other. If Autumn turns into a popsicle blame me 😂😈
PTM: embracing your own sexuality and sensuality has become a huge thing for women/femme to learn especially over the recent years — can you share how you all have done that and if you can offer any advice to those still struggling or questioning?
Summer: I would say that there’s no timeline for when you need to come out. Please never feel like you owe anyone anything. Just do what makes you happy. Love whoever the hell you wanna love, whenever the hell you want to. Screw everyone else.
Winter: Everyone deserves to be loved and accepted for who they are and not who they give their love to, but that’s not always the case. What I’d like my fellow queer community to hear from me is know that you will find your tribe, whether that be biological or not. Know you will find your community and we are all here waiting for you, but if you’re not in a safe place to join us yet, we will be here waiting for you, when you can.
PTM: Would you say sexuality plays a significant role within your music?
Winter: I feel all of us girls love to express our sensuality and sexuality in our songs because it’s true to who we are. We like feeling sexy and free. With 4 girls that identify differently, we somehow find a way to make everyone feel comfy with what lyrics we write and sing.
PTM: you mentioned a plan for four EP‘s inspired by the four seasons — what can listeners expect from these EPs?
Summer: They can expect some 90s nostalgia and some FEELS
Autumn: Ok Summer is obviously BOPS on BOPS- Autumn, a little more edgy and lyrical, Winter we’re gonna hit you with some deep ballady FEELS and Spring– it’s time to shake our booties again.
PTM: What do you hope fans gain from listening to your music? Especially young girls and women.
Summer: I hope that the music makes them feel confident. I hope that when they’re getting ready to go out, they play “Tequila w/ Lime” or “Behave” and remember they don’t need to take any shit, from any man or anyone.
Winter: I hope our fans gain confidence, strength and power from our music. We just want you to know you’re a bad biotch and can do anything you set your mind to.
Spring: I hope our fans feel feisty and spicy when they hear our music, like they could take on the whole world.
PTM: Do you guys have any set goals in mind for not only The group, but also as individual artists?
Summer: Right now we’re focused on what we can do as a group and our interests as individuals isn’t something we’re thinking about.
Autumn: As a group we are so excited to release more and more music, we have merch we’ve been working on, and a few other fun surprises we don’t want to give away quite yet! Individually I am on a mission to learn how to do my eyeliner. The other SZNS are such makeup gods and I need to get on their level.
PTM: Thank you guys so much for taking time to sit down and chat — is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you so much!! We’ve loved spending time with you. And to our fans, we love you guys! Thanks for getting “Tequila w/ Lime” to 1mil streams!!! ♥️
