Ontario based musician, August Brodie, has finally released his newest single, “Playing For Keeps”. The track features both an alt-rock as well as some pop influences. “Playing For Keeps” is about the end of a toxic relationship when things become truly strained. The new track is the fifth project the artist has delivered this year (so far!).
The emotional track is heightened by the cadence of his voice and further amplifies emotions with such direct and personal lyrics. His vulnerability pours through as he sings about the point in a relationship where things are so toxic, it becomes more of a game than a relationship.
Speaking on the meaning of “Playing For Keeps,” August Brodie explained, “I’ve had relationships where it gets to the point where both sides become vindictive towards each other by trying to make the other love them even if they can’t do so themselves, and all so that they can come out on top,” He shared the inspiration behind the track, “To me it’s just such a dark and twisted thing to do to someone who you once loved, to have it become a competition for the remainder of each other’s heart in the end, but it happens. With lyrics like ‘I need your love – even though I won’t love again‘, the song tries to capture that emotional conflict.”
“Playing For Keeps” follows Brodie’s other highly reviewed 2020 releases, “drive u crazy”, “Long Distance”, “Damaged”, “Too Late” and “Selfish”. Beginning in hip-hop, the Canadian solo artist developed a keen sense of wordplay and flow that elevated him within the music scene. Since then, he’s grown his sound and developed his style to transcend the genre’s long-standing traditions, while also taking inspiration from elements of 2000’s emo and pop-punk – thus creating a seamless blend amongst the genres, perfectly match with his cunning lyricism.
August Brodie is a bright young newcomer that has grown in popularity with a new modern sound, blending pop-punk, hip-hop, and alt-rock styles to create emotional anthems. His raw lyrical content and melodic rhythm create a nostalgic, yet refreshing vibe. His lyrics touch on themes about relationships, love, loss, and growing up—he writes lyrics that listeners can truly relate to. He recently reached over one million streams on Spotify. His fanbase is growing quickly, and with several new singles coming up and a debut project being planned, we look forward to what the future holds for August Brodie.
