For the people looking for a cathartic outlet, look no further than Band of Silver, a sibling pop-rock trio from Nashville, who have released their latest single, “Are We Are We Not.” The track fuses painstakingly honest lyricism with wavy guitar riffs and laser-like synths to fashion an escape from our fears — and an entryway into the relief that comes with being upfront about how you feel.
As intergalactic synths shoot out, guitarist Alex Silvernagel puts his immense fingerpicking skills to work, creating a simultaneously soothing and ethereal feeling. Frontwoman Avery Silvernagel peers in, offering words everyone wishes they had the guts to say to the person they can’t stop thinking about but going especially hard in the chorus: “Are we, are we not? Are you gonna take a shot? ‘Cause I’m sick of playing your games.” Evan Silvernagel adds a layer of exasperation with his smooth drumming, creating not only a flawlessly executed track but the perfect three minutes to spend generating enough energy to tackle anything.
Of the song, Avery Silvernagel shares: “‘Are We Are We Not’ is about the tension between two people trying to figure out if they should be more than just friends. This song is essentially a prequel to our track ‘Closure,’ despite being written after that relationship ended. It’s the words you wish you could cut loose and tell your crush, but you’re both too uncertain to say. Now you have a song you can play for that person instead.”
The release of “Are We Are We Not,” the first of many to come, follows the siblings’ 2020 EP, Always. The EP made its focal point as conjuring up enough willpower to overcome the inevitable chaos of life, leaning on family and faith to get through the rough patches. This new single, on the other hand, seems to be knocking on the door of a rebrand — switching their focus from getting over heartbreak to confronting the culprit and not letting anything tear them down anymore. Fans of anyone from Madonna to Panic! At The Disco will form a soft spot for Band of Silver, and it seems like the content from them will only get better as time passes.
