In the EDM/house music world, Asian-Canadian producer Didi + Ping is a fun character to follow. Only four singles into his career as a DJ, Didi + Ping [also known as Kristian Wang] has opened his steadily growing audience up to new dimensions of his musical prowess. From the loopy synthesizers guiding his first single “Buffalo Jump” to the more analog piano lead in his last release “Pharaoh” — Didi + Ping is well on his way of becoming a household name. Once again bringing creative experimentation and organic influences to house music, Didi + Ping continues to establish himself as a bit of a rare breed in the EDM scene, as new sounds and production techniques add ambiance and depth to his records and he hones in closer to realizing his full potential as an artist.
Filled with mystique and driven by Wang’s latest confection of smooth, electronic tones, Didi + Ping’s “Rings of Saturn” glides along with dream-like luster. Mixing together analog keyboard, pulsating basses, and a fast-moving lead synth line, “Rings of Saturn” becomes one of his most interesting productions to date.
A bit of a diversion from his previous singles — which undoubtedly took more cues from traditional piano arpeggios — this jam leans more heavily into the sparkly, cosmic-sounding synthesizer sounds more common to mainstream house music. As Wang continues to evolve his sound and experiment with the multitude of electronic instruments and mods at his disposal, each new single from Didi + Ping indicates a new element of growth in his ongoing journey as a producer. “Rings of Saturn” is brilliantly representative of this point, with Wang utilizing more dynamic fluctuations throughout the track. He’ll lead you into the track with a growling bass line and minimalistic beat before seizing your attention yet again with a reverberating celestial cry, mixing in those familiar keyboard arpeggios throughout. Even as Didi + Ping digs deeper into his wealth of programmed instruments, the backbone of this track still lies with his prowess as a multi-instrumentalist.
On “Rings of Saturn,” Kristian Wang continues to capitalize on his uncanny gift of blending an obvious love for organic, classically-minded composition with house-influenced EDM. From one single to the next, his creativity is apparent, as is his excitement to try new things. Wang selected the moniker Didi + Ping as a tribute to his family and Chinese heritage, with Didi being the Mandarin word for “younger brother” [of which he is one] and Ping being his Chinese namesake. As he continues to bring his multifarious background to each of his creative endeavors, we’re definitely looking forward to seeing what he’s got in store.
