This week we bring you an exciting new track from the Indie folk duo, Elgin. Today, Anthony Furey and Paul Butler released their debut single, “Cherry Picked” — as part of an effort to explore their sound and develop their songwriting.
While this may be the first we’re hearing from them as a duo, Anthony and Paul are not new to the music world. The pair were originally the founding members of The Young Folk, the acclaimed Dublin collective. During their time as The Young Folk they toured all over Ireland, Europe and even internationally in the United States. You may recognize the song “Way Home,” the hit single from their debut album The Little Battle. This new track from Elgin represents a new direction musically and lyrically for these two and we are delighted by the product.
“Cherry Picked” immediately pulls you in with a sentimental guitar line. The pair then adds layers of synths and even incorporates a warm, vibrant brass section. Beautiful, dreamy vocals are just the cherry on top. Not only do they make the message of the track reach an even deeper level, the resulting atmosphere of all these parts together is nothing short of heavenly. Upon listening to the lyrics, you can hear – and feel – the emotions that went in to this song.
On how the song came about, Paul says “A phrase that’s being thrown around a lot recently between friends is the idea of impostor syndrome. A feeling of self-doubt and a sense of intellectual fraudulence. It’s the feeling I get when I can’t write or I haven’t created anything for a while. It’s easy to get carried away with these thoughts and allow them to develop into something they’re not. The song is mainly about letting go of these ideas and allowing yourself to breathe.”
It is evident the pair have refined their sound to produce a truly elegant and mature track. This song is only the first taste of what is to come — later this year, Elgin is expected to release a wider body of work as they continue to build their folk roots while experimenting with new instrumentation and sounds. There is a lot to look forward to for this pair and we are excited to see what they achieve on their new musical adventure.
