Australian rock band, Hands Like Houses, is back with their latest single, “The Water”. The intense, hook riddled track is full of longing and nostalgia. The perfect end-of-summer anthem belting, “I said, ‘take me back down to the water, don’t make goodbye any harder / Don’t make it harder than it has to be / This place was never meant for someone like me.” In addition to this stellar release, the band has announced their self-titled EP will be released on Friday, October 23 through UNFD globally.
Lead vocalist, Trenton Woodley, spoke on why the track was so special to him, saying “I picture the protagonist as some beautiful, fantastical, strange and surreal sea creature that has come to live among us, but wants to go home. I feel like the voice of this song is one that has done its best to make a place to belong, but knows it doesn’t, can’t or won’t, and is trying to say a heartfelt, honest goodbye.”
Trenton continued, “Of course, that’s not to say there’s not a piece of me buried in that voice. I don’t think you get to come this far in life without wondering if you really belong to this particular path you’ve found yourself on, if there’s not somewhere else or someone else you’re meant to be. The harder the times, the bigger the question becomes in your mind. When it comes down to it, it’s a song about closing doors and opening new ones.”
The track is the Hands Like Houses’ latest release since their last single “Space“ in June, which found the band dealing with the emotional and spatial tension in a difficult recording environment. Their forthcoming EP, created over a 10-day period, will focus on themes of collisions, resolutions, communication and expression, and will be the band’s first project since their acclaimed 2018 album -Anon.
The EP and single’s cover art expand the theme of expression, featuring AUSLAN, aka Sign Language. While the band explained that they haven’t yet had personal experience using the language, they are committed to encouraging appreciation and learning of the language among their fans. In addition, the band wanted to pay their respects and show appreciation to AUSLAN interpreters who have been essential in reporting news about extensive bushfires and COVID-19 coverage of late.
To celebrate the new era, the band will host a livestream event this Saturday, August 29 @ 8pm AEST (Friday, August 28 @ 3am PDT / 6am EDT) streamed directly from their beloved hometown, Canberra.
After forming in 2008, Hands Like Houses went on to sign a record deal in January 2012, and soon after released their first album Ground Dweller in March. They went on to embark on their first US tour, The Freshman Class of ’12 Tour, supporting The Air I Breathe, Palisades and My Ticket Home. They went on to release three more albums and partake in several more sold out tours. They’ve set themselves as one of Australia’s most acclaimed modern rock bands.
