French instrumental group Les Agamemnonz have shared their latest single, “Xiphias,” which appear on their forthcoming album, Amateurs, due out June 11 via Hi-Tide Recordings. The nearly two-and-a-half minute track oozes with beach vibes and is the perfect relaxer after a long day.
Winding guitars open the track, setting the scene for what can easily be imagined as the biggest surf competition of the century: competitors wiping down their boards, sun burning the sand, water washing over burnt feet. Subtle, jazz-like drums join in the mix before the guitars stretch all the way across the stratosphere, echoing with delight. They build and build before one takes initiative, firing off a solo for the ages. A drum roll sets off a line of brass, which adds a bit of flair to an already exuberant, lush soundscape. It all suddenly fades, completely dying out after only a few seconds, but the infectious energy it created never truly leaves.
Of the single, the band shares: “The greatest challenge in writing surf music is to keep it as bare and simple as it can be. Sometimes it demands a lot of ‘pruning’. We pruned ‘Xiphias’ a lot so it can swim as fast as a swordfish.”
