LISTEN: Losers Club Premieres New Single “Just Like Shakespeare”

Losers Club Just Like Shakespeare review
Words By: Amanda Marano

Alternative rock band, Losers Club has just released their latest single, “Just Like Shakespeare.”  The track was inspired by quarantine and written throughout the struggle of self-isolation while trying to maintain our physical and mental health and reflection on what’s most important in our lives. The energetic track is fresh yet familiar, giving off 2000s rom-com vibes and lyrics that make listeners reminiscent of their teenage angst. Listeners will want to sing along and revel in their memories.

With self-isolation sparking creativity, Losers Club decided to try something new and take a crack at their own version of a love song. Guitarist/vocalist, Nate Blasdell, explained, “We try to stray away from love songs or anything of the realm, but sometimes they’re just unavoidable. We wanted to take the background of Romeo & Juliet and make the ending a little more happier.”

The bittersweet reality of having time off from their normal routine was a big change, but the band made the most of the situation and found inspiration in their experience. Blasdell shared, “When the quarantine started, it just ignited a spark to write. I wrote like 7 songs in the first month of the shutdown. This was one of the first we wrote. Since we weren’t able to go to the studio, I recorded most of it in my basement, I’d send ideas out to [producer] Rob Freeman [Hit The Lights, Armor For Sleep] who would then fix, edit it, and pretty much bring it to life. We couldn’t be happier with how it came out.”

Losers Club entered the scene with catchy choruses and a pop-punk style. Led by Nate Blasdell – best known from metalcore projects like The Bunny, The Bear, or more recently I Set My Friends on Fire – the band delivers a more pop-leaning sound. Blasdell, a native New Yorker, has been making waves as a singer and songwriter since the age of sixteen. He has worked with bands like MKTO, The Vamps, and Big Time Rush – writing some of your favorite pop-rock hits. This project is a step into the pop spotlight for Blasdell. Creating the perfect group was an easy decision for the artist, who joined forces with Andy Champion [Roses are Red], and close friends Cody Wagner and Aidan Snyder. Together, their musical backgrounds, inspirations, and influences work seamlessly to create the sound of Losers Club.

The band premiered their memorable debut single “Emerald Eyes”, in April 2019. The track was written, recorded, and produced in Blasdell’s studio at his parent’s home – unveiling an immense level of talent. Blasdell was inspired to write the song when he was reminiscing about his past tours and the complex emotions that come with the intense travel and busy schedules. The lyrics talk about the difficulties of touring and the effect it takes on artists’ relationships with their loved ones, which anyone who has had to be away from loved ones can relate to.

If this is what Losers Club can come up with locked inside self-isolation, then imagine what can be possible when unleashed in the world. While “Just Like Shakespeare” becomes the group’s first take on a love song, it holds a deeper underlining historical irony. After all, Shakespeare himself did write King Lear while in quarantine…so I guess you could say “Just Like Shakespeare”  is Losers Club’s own iconic quarantine creation?
