Lowertown Tourist Trap

Lowertown is back with a brand new single titled “Tourist Trap” off of their upcoming EP Honeycomb, Bedbug. The track has a homegrown feel with lyrics inspired by the monotony of daily routines and feeling like you’re just going through the motions without truly living. It’s the perfect Monday morning listen that will help ease you into your day.

“Tourist Trap” is the epitome of senioritis, with Lowertown’s Olivia Osby and Avsha Weinberg singing about the tediousness of living in boxes and doing the same thing every day. They wrote the track during their senior year of high school, as that feeling of pointlessness is one felt across generations, from high school students to senior citizens. “I think a lot of us get trapped in a ‘box’ whether it’s the thought loops we get locked into or our daily routine,” Osby said. “It can be a hollowing experience being in the box for too long…You can’t remember a time before living in this ‘box’ and you can’t imagine life outside of it because the unknown is terrifying.” Feeling monotonous or tedious are very relatable ideas, especially when we are all quarantined and working from home often with the same routine every day.

The production on the track is impeccable, with homemade sounds and instrumentation perfectly capturing both Lowertown’s sound and the themes of the song. The band is incredibly inventive, using broken tambourines, toy drum machines, and the sound of their own feet tapping on the floor as percussion for this track which provides not only a great sound but one that feels intimate. Osby commented, “We wanted the song to feel like the listener was in the room with us when we wrote it. We left every little sound in of us tapping on the tables and water rushing in the pipes in the studio because we felt like we needed the instrumentals to be as raw and emotional as the lyrics were.”

The band is incredibly well developed and matured for a group so young and fresh on the scene. They have created a unique image entirely their own that also fits perfectly into the spectrum of indie music today. The depth of the themes on their tracks are miles ahead of other artists their age, and their talent was noticed by none other than the 1975’s label, Dirty Hit, who recently signed the group and is releasing their upcoming EP Honeycomb, Bedbug.  The first single off the track, “Best Person You Know,” was released back in early November.  The full EP is out on December 11 which will give listeners even more to enjoy.
