It’s been nine years since alternative rock collective, Madina Lake has released new tunes. Since their initial hiatus back in 2011 – fans always held out hope that we would one day welcome back a band that helped define a generation of listeners. In 2017 fans were ecstatic when Madina Lake announced a series of reunion shows across the US and UK, promising there would be more to come. But as the time ticked on, with no new music in sight, fans began to worry that this was just a one-off sort of thing. That is until April of this year when Madina Lake release their first single in 9 years, “Playing With Fire” – the first official track off their long-awaited EP The Beginning Of New Endings. But as fans begged for more, Madina Lake delivered – in June they revealed the second single from the EP, “Heart Of Gold”. Not wasting any more time – last week, Madina Lake shared the third single featured on the EP, “Love Is War”.
The track begins much heavier than the typical Madina Lake discography before breaking into a more classic Madina Lake take. Throughout the song we taken on a story of a young lovers quarrel – while one begs for space the other begs to be heard – “I just want to take you by the arms/Scream your name until you hear me out/Until you know that I couldn’t love you more.” The lyrics shout a plea for understanding that love evolves, and it’s not always easy. It can often feel like you are at war with your partner but what brings you back is that spark that burst into a flame.
The backdrop of the single is Madina Lake’s token, Adalia. From their start, Adalia has played as their mascot [if you will] setting up the band’s backstory – set in a fictional 1950s town of Madina Lake, a local, gorgeous celebrity named Adalia goes missing, which soon launches the town into the hunt to find her. Throughout Madina Lake’s discography, we have watched as Adalia makes various physical appearances yet her story developed into a deeper mystery. With this being the first new music since their 2011 release, Word War III, fans are eager to see how Madina Lake plans to continue on the mysterious tale of Adalia – if at all.
The Beginning Of New Endings is set to drop September 4 – and with only two more tracks to be revealed, fans may have to wait until then to hear the story unfold. Until that day though, one can hope for a music video or two showcasing one of our favorite bands from the days of Myspace, Fuse, and Warped Tour.
