Alt-pop artist on the rise, Maggie Miles recently dropped a brand new single “Swim.” The track features Miles struggling to keep her head above water and find the strength to tread amid the disarray of her own mind. The theme of the song is timeless, but it resonates deeper with the rush of emotions the world is currently undergoing.
“Swim” follows Miles’s previous release and first co-wrote single in Nashville “WHATDOISAY?,” a forthright pop-infused track that found itself in various playlists from the likes of New Music Friday, to Indie Pop, Fresh Finds, and more. Miles’s previous single “Shiver” gained attention from Billboard and American Songwriter. Miles’s sound is original, distancing itself from the rest in a time of bedroom pop overpowering playlists and radio play. She has garnered over 60K monthly Spotify listeners, and it is evident that listeners are noticing her unique artistry.
“We all encounter this question at times,” Miles shares her feelings on “Swim,” “You can’t tell if you’re barely above the waves; just doggy paddling, gasping every chance you can. Or if you’re absolutely still, floating on your back, letting the density of your state of mind hold you atop the water. Whatever it is, we’ve all been there. And acknowledging the darkness that can make itself home in the space behind your eyes is key to pushing on. This song helped me understand myself better, and I hope for your sake as the listener, it can do the same.”
The up-and-coming singer-songwriter has had a fair share of deterrents along her journey as a musician, but she continues to swim. Miles was set to perform in her relatively new hometown of Nashville earlier this month, but unfortunately, the city was hit by a horrible tornado. Miles always makes the most of situations, and she continued with the show, making it a benefit for the city, raising over 2k in 24 hours. This September, she is set to perform her first-ever set at Bonnaroo in TN, on the coveted SheRoo stage, a special facet of the music and arts festival. The stage celebrates feminine power and also creates a safe space for individuality. Miles is currently sponsored by Yamaha as part of their emerging artist program, and they are planning to launch some highly curated video content later this year.
“Swim” by Maggie Miles begins with a static-y intro, with faint “oh-oh’s” filling the emptiness before Miles’s honey vocals begin to sing the story of trying not to drown in her own head, “I / I fell in / Am I drowning? / Or am I just learning how to swim / I / I’m sinking / If I push up from the bottom / Will I breathe again?” At the end of the track, her vocals are cut off nearly instantly, ending with only the static sound again. You are left to let the song sink in before hitting replay.
A lot like some of her fellow musician peers, such as Maggie Rogers and Billie Eilish, Maggie Miles emits originality which the modern generation is gravely yearning for. Originally from the Western Hills of Northern Virginia, she recently moved to Nashville to pursue music full-time. Miles grew up on the soulful vocals of vintage artists like Stevie Nicks and Ann Wilson but has found 90s grunge to be a major source of inspiration as of late. She meshes all of her influences together with pounding, anthemic instrumentals to create a sound that’s all her own. In her music, she addresses the conflicts of life through sharp-hitting lyrics textured in alternative rhythms with pop sensibilities that paint a compelling picture of our imperfect existence. The contrast of her jangly sounds and perceptive lyrics are a result of her commitment to connectivity through the honest expression of the human condition. She shares, “I make music for the utter reason alone that I need to create something for myself that makes sense when nothing else around me does.”
