Australian Pop Punk collective, Yours Truly, just released a new rapid-fire track, “Together” – which comes as a follow up to their latest power ballad, “Composer”. Both tracks come off their newly announced debut album Self Care – which drops this September. The Aussie four-piece break out band came to be as an intended healing process for all of those involved and who care to listen – with their debut album reflecting heavily on that all-important message.
“Together” speaks on the polarizing effects of never feeling like you accomplished much and what does get done isn’t quite good enough – weighing heavy into the themes of impostor syndrome. After seeing immediate recognition for their 2019 EP Afterglow, vocalist Mikaila Delgado speaks on the stresses that form for a young musician just breaking out within the scene – “I had a lot of fear and anxiety coming into this album, having this expectation to exceed what we did with Afterglow. I remember telling myself, ‘you need to write the best songs of your life’ and getting upset about the possibility of not being able to prove ourselves. One night I turned to Lachlan (Cronin, guitar) and said ‘I just feel all the colour has been drained from my brain’ and we both looked at each other with wide eyes, and that’s how the idea of ‘Together’ came about.”
With already having accomplished so much in such a short amount of time – touring alongside Sum 41 and Senses Fail to festival offers from the likes of Riot Fest, Download UK, Slam Dunk, and Sad Summer – it’s easy to forget that these young musicians are fresh out of high school and have yet to gain a handle on the real world, much less the music world. But where there are wounds, there’s healing – Delgado goes into the rollercoaster ride experience in recording the album, “There was this almost electric feeling of excitement about getting to sit down and write our first record but also a huge feeling of anxiety at the same time. We didn’t want to release something and have people say that we’re actually not that good and weren’t worthy of all the success we were getting… it was like we all had imposter syndrome. We really learnt and lived a lot in one year, and writing these songs allowed me to understand myself on a whole new level throughout it all.”
While Yours Truly may still be young bucks inside this crazy music scene, they seem to be quickly growing during what can arguably be one of the biggest learning experiences of their lives. Be able to make those solid connections with scene legends is what’s going to help Yours Truly thrive in this cut-throat industry. With the unfortunate pandemic bringing a screeching halt to all live music gatherings, this incredible 4-piece can take this time to experiment within their craft and branch out to those they’ll soon be sharing the stage with in 2021. Most notably the acts highlighted on Journey’s Sad Summer Fest – which keeps its 2020 lineup in its entirety in its rescheduled 2021 dates. While small tours and big festivals always bring a heap of knowledge to new musicians – festivals like Sad Summer Fest bring a deeper feeling of family and community amongst the artists and fans.
