Sass-core group SeeYouSpaceCowboy have released “Painting A Clear Picture From A Unreliable Narrator” from A Sure Disaster, their upcoming split with post-hardcore outfit If I Die First. The band’s solo track off the split pops with the angst and frustration we all wish we had the guts to divulge to our exes.
There is no build-up — the track wastes no time, kicking off with a guitar line that’s laced with rage and ready to lay down the law. SeeYouSpaceCowboy frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa confronts her ex, letting them know if they’re going to talk about her behind her back, they should at least get their facts straight. She’s seething, so filled to the brim with pure vexation that the instruments around her don’t know how to take it, practically exploding with her via grating drums and sore throat-inducing screams.
It calms to a brief moment of spoken word before a scream lets loose again, followed by a chorus that feels like it could be a hint in the pop-punk universe. Every member tells their respective ex to forget about them as well as all their shared memories — because they want nothing to do with them moving forward. More screams appear and waver before disappearing with the second rendition of the chorus, where the intricate guitars shine. The track ends with one last set of screams and putting the nail in the coffin: telling the ex they better keep their mouth shut or they won’t know what’s coming for them.
Of the track, Sgarbossa shares: “We are really excited to share this track because I think it serves as a good sample for how we have been approaching music for SYSC for the future. Over quarantine we spent a lot of time writing and discussing what we wanted to do moving forward and we came to the conclusion we wanted to create something that was distinctly us again.”
SeeYouSpaceCowboy have been around since 2016, taking names and curating booming tracks that never fail to leave listeners with a newfound sense of life. Their latest album, 2019’s The Correlation Between Entrance and Exit Wounds, found Sgarbossa and company showcasing why they’re meant to rule the hardcore genre. This split, however, may just be the piece of proof the few doubters needed.
