Americana duo Sunny Bones have released their latest dreamy single, “Echoes of You.” The track feels like a classic beach scene in a film where a girl, in slow motion, flips her hair and her soon-to-be lover stares at her, mesmerized. Finally, because of “Echoes of You,” listens can feel themselves as a part of that tender moment.
A lap steel opens the track, emerging into a tranquil guitar-driven melody. Frontwoman Helen Anderson instantly dives into her overwhelming emotions, revealing that she ends every night with tears in her eyes over how her ex she treated her. When her eyes open the next morning, she becomes frustrated with herself, wondering why she lets the memory of her ex still haunt her. She’s now with someone else who treats her right, but she can’t escape the thoughts of her past. She continues to flip back and forth between deciding if she still loves her ex or if they’ve permanently scarred her to the point they she can’t evade them. The track cleverly ends with an echo effect, Anderson’s words reverberating just like thoughts of her ex do in her mind each night. The immaculate beach vibes offset the reflective lyrics, forming a juxtaposition that’s never worked so seamlessly.
Of the single, Anderson shares: “‘Echoes of You’ is about that feeling you get when you’re in a new happy relationship, but the memories of your ex creep in and haunt you, which make you confused and question your feelings. Love is a complex subject and can rear its head when you least expect it or at times of vulnerability, often distorting facts and memories to suit a narrative that you prefer as to the reality.”
“Echoes of You” is the follow-up to the band’s debut single, “Be Cool,” which was released at the end of last year. Sunny Bones is the brainchild of Anderson and Ben Asker, who formed the group after meeting in their last band, Box of Light. They decided to venture off and create music that suits both of their styles more, combining elements of genres they both love and thought-provoking lyrics. They blended their love for groups like Alvvays, Best Coast, The Beatles and more, and thus Sunny Bones was born.
