Today, Tally Spear has released her latest EP, Tally. The six-track project showcases her unique style of alt-pop that flaunts a carefree, glamorous streak, with dark gothic elements woven in. The tracks were produced with Martin Hollis [Adele, Tom Walker, Mark Ronson] and Max Marlow [Kodaline, Declan MeKenna] as well as Marc Dowding and Anthony Trueman of Sound Collective.
The EP starts off strong with several of her highly acclaimed singles – starting with, “What Do I Want” that leans more towards rock on her spectrum of pop. Singing with a whisper at times, hitting high notes at others, the song showcases her range in vocal delivery and stylings.
Up next, “Can’t Find What I’m Looking For” continues with more elements of pop rock over some darker bass. She sings about the pursuit of happiness and the struggle to feel fulfilled with life. Speaking on the single, Tally shared, “We’re always looking for something, someone, to make us ‘happy.’ You begin questioning what it is you’re trying to find, and if it even exists. This song is about the struggle to find meaningful relationships, experiences, and the difficulty of just being content in this society.”
“Oddball” sounds like it was written for Harley Quinn herself. The darker leaning track is reminiscent of iconic tracks like Britney Spears’ “If U Seek Amy”. With her gothic vibes well woven in, she sings about her individuality, “I’m an oddball / I’m a real lost cause / You know I’ll never be like the ones before / I’m an oddball/ But you like me more.”
Following after, “Already Gone” brings a Billie-Eilish-esque depth with a guiding bass and her singing in a deeper octave. Speaking on the punk leaning track, she explained “The track tackles feelings of detachment and distance. It is kind of the opposite of all the happy ‘honeymoon phase’ songs out there. I wanted to explore the sometimes negative thought processes surrounding new beginnings, and a desire for independence.”
Shaking things up is a brand new rock track, “City Girl”, which even has some elements of her country/ folk roots. As she sings about a tumultuous relationship, the lyrics transform into a song about independence. Tally closes the EP with a cover of British rock band Cream’s “I Feel Free”, which she made alongside King Charles. The indie, pop track features a hint of psychedelic reverie in its sound, and the bluesy rock element complements her folk-leaning upbringings.
Tally Spears is a London based artist and DIY queen, who has risen in the scene as she writes and co-produces her own music, as well as edits and directs her own music videos and visuals. Clash Magazine called her “Resolutely DIY, she’s able to make something grand from the smallest budget, nailing down her ideas with impeccable precision.”
Tally is an active animal rights advocate and lover of eco-fashion, and she’s no stranger to standing up for the things she’s passionate about. She’s not afraid to get emotional, but she’s also ready to step up and take the lead in any situation. She focuses on themes of social commentary and personal conflict which she interprets through her intimate lyrics. Add that to her driving bass riffs and catchy choruses, and you’ve got a star in the making.
