Indie pop rock trio the Happy Fits have just released a double dose of new singles with, “Another Try” and “Cold Turkey.” The new songs continue their successful blending of orchestral strings and traditional rock. The band has positive energy in spades, which bleeds through into their music. They have a knack for writing catchy melodies and uplifting lyrics. During the time we’re living in, The Happy Fits are the perfect antidote to those pandemic blues.

“Another Try” is somewhat disarming as it starts off with just cello and vocals. The full-throated strings give the song weight. As the other instruments come in it becomes more of a subtle background effect, but it can be felt throughout the whole song. It’s complimentary to the guitars and adds bottom end along with the bass. The chorus is massive and taken straight from 80s alternative pop. The track has elements from Echo and the Bunnymen, especially the keyboards and double-tracked vocals. At the same time “Another Try” emulates the epic scope of Electric Light Orchestra with its larger than life drumming boom and layered instruments. The Happy Fits don’t take themselves too seriously though. “Another Try” is an earworm of a song that reminds us why we love music.

“Cold Turkey” has a hand-clapping rhythm and a chorus that’s easy to sing along to. The strings are more up front in this song and is more akin to the Beatles. The lyrics address the isolation of the pandemic head on, but they turn it around into something hopeful. “It’s gonna take some time and space honey/So when you go leave me alone/It’s gonna get you high and low honey/So when you go leave me alone.” It’s easy to imagine this song going over well with a crowd of people singing the choruses and whistling along at the end.

The Happy Fits’ talent lies in creating memorable melodies that stand out from standard indie pop. The group takes conventions of 60s music and brings it up to date. The strings aren’t a gimmick. They’re baked into the band’s sound, adding unique textures underneath well-constructed songs. The Happy Fits’ new single raises our spirits and allows us to live in the moment if only for a few minutes.
