LISTEN: We Were Sharks Unveil “Over This”

We Were Sharks Over This
Words By: Bre Offenberger

Canadian punk outfit We Were Sharks have released “Over This,” the latest single from their newly announced forthcoming album, New Low, due out May 21 via Revival Recordings. The track was the quintessential choice to offer, as it’s that point in the semester where everyone is burnt out and tired, and everyone is desperately yearning for the relief of summer.

Frontman Randy Frobel kicks off the track by calmly telling his partner he’s ready to move on from them before it explodes into a pool of angst, made perfect by an uproar of guitars and throbbing drums. He continues the narrative by explaining how his ex won’t take him off the line despite his disclosure that he’s losing interest in their relationship. He’s even starting to lose control of himself due to their incessant need to keep him in their life. The bridge finds the instrumentation drawn back to a few buzzing synths, but it grows into a jaw-dropping guitar solo via Jason Mooney that imparts Frobel’s frustration to a T. At one point, Frobel’s partner apologizes, but it’s not enough, and he concludes by repeating over and over that there’s a million other places he’s rather be. It’s not revealed whether he officially cuts ties, but it’s a good guess to say he will sooner or later.

Of the single, Mooney shares: “A lot of songs tell stories, but when we talked about what ‘Over This’ was going to be about we decided to talk about a feeling or vibe rather than go the narrative route. We wanted to talk about the feeling you have when you find yourself in a place in life where you should be filled with joy, happiness, pride and essentially every positive feeling imaginable. Instead you feel lost with no sense of enthusiasm. Although you should appreciate the moments, you feel like you would rather be doing absolutely anything else and be anywhere else than where you are right now.”

We Were Sharks are set to host New Low: The Visual Album Experience,” which will see them performing the album in its entirety almost a month before it drops. The event happens April 30 and will also include a Q&A, in addition to live performance videos, behind-the-scenes footage and a look into their documentary. Tickets are available via Veeps and can be purchased below.

The 10-track New Low is not a departure from their recognizable sound, but an extension of it. It’s bound to be not only one of the best of the year, but among the greatest of the genre in recent memory. While the band continues to make waves in the punk world, fans will be sitting idly by, witnessing their permanent takeover.
