Mikey Ferrari spaceboy
Words By: Jason Russo

Visionary singer, songwriter, and producer Mikey Ferrari joins us for our next livestream, Play Too Much Live hosted by Jason Russo! Catch the performance Wednesday, March 31 at 3:30pm ET on Twitch, Twitter, Facebook Live, and YouTube Live!

Mikey Ferrari is fresh off the release of his gorgeous debut EP, SPACEBOY featuring popular singles like “moving slow” and “lunar light.”  The EP explores his concept of a ‘spaceboy’, centering the idea of ‘space’ representing loneliness and isolation with a ‘spaceboy’ as someone struggling with depression and feelings of inadequacy.  “Growing up, I experienced a lot of dark thoughts and ideations and I didn’t quite understand how to grapple or how to cope with them,” Ferrari said on the SPACEBOY concept. “With the pandemic, I feel like more of our population has begun to experience isolation and depression as well as anxiety…I feel so lucky to have found music as my way to express myself and vocalize my emotions. With that being said, I want to encourage people to find that outlet so they can start to overcome their difficulties and come to a further understanding of their emotions.”

The EP is a diverse listen, with tracks ranging from the gentle, stripped down “wind blows” to the trip-hop influenced banger “moving slow.”  The messages also oscillate between boldly exclaiming to be the future of music in “moving slow” to lamenting the loss of a friend in “standoff”. The diversity of these emotions make it a provocative listen that highlight Mikey Ferrari’s musical expertise and unique writing style.  SPACEBOY both laments the experience of being a spaceboy and celebrates it, largely sending a message of hope that being an outsider is okay.

While Mikey Ferrari cites Kid Cudi, James Blake, and Jon Bellion as major inspirations behind his music, his visuals are something straight out of an Ari Aster film.  The video for “spaceboy” shows Mikey running through an eerie, black-and-white forest surrounded by smoke and dancers before he levitates out of his house and out through the woods.  It’s out-of-this-world creepy and also incredibly cinematic and poignant watch.

Mikey Ferrari has been making music since he was a kid growing up in the Bay Area of Los Angeles.  His creative process is a way of grappling with his anxieties and creating music that he hopes will inspire people to embrace who they truly are. SPACEBOY has already caught the attention of Alternative PressMTV, and was recently praised on the popular livestream roundtable Before The Data. Stay tuned for more releases from Mikey Ferrari coming soon!
