Nate Valdez is a multi-talented singer and songwriter, who kicked off his career while apart of the alt-rock band INTHEWHALE. Now Nate is reintroducing himself as VALDEZ — his latest solo endeavor. Inspired by his time in Las Animas, Colorado working for his grandfather’s mortuary, his first string of releases revolve around themes of mortality, remorse, and fading memories.
His first single, “Saint Munchausen,” dropped back at the end of August — drawing inspiration from the disease Munchausen by Proxy. “Saint Munchausen” begs the question — do those around us truly have our best interests at heart? The track is meant as a metaphor for the music industry and is sung from the point of view of someone suffering with the disease. With clear Spanish influences, “Saint Munchausen” is a frantic, hard-hitting track. Strong vocals are backed by driving acoustic guitars and trumpets, all paired with a visually stunning lyric video.
His next release came in October, just in time for Halloween. Appropriately named, “Ghost” — the single houses a message from spirits who need to be seen by the living in order to validate their existence. The track is a nod to ‘mysterious occurrences’ at his grandfather’s mortuary and is equally as haunting. “Ghost” solidifies VALDEZ’s style of alt-rock with lo-fi influences. What really sets “Ghost” apart is its music video. Super fan of INTHEWHALE, Nick, sent in an endearing and charming home video that VALDEZ fell in love with. “Nick is a fan of my other band and would come to shows and rock out,” VALDEZ said, “He always makes his own music videos of him playing along to songs that he loves, and his passion for music is so contagious. I wanted to show the world how awesome he is!”
