Sister pop duo Aly & AJ have announced the upcoming release of their first album in 14 years, a touch of the beat gets you up on your feet gets you out and then into the sun, due out May 7. Alongside the release, there will also be a one-night only virtual concert at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles as well as a virtual town hall on May 8. Tickets for the latter can be found at AXS.com.
The impending 12-track album’s title comes from an unreleased track on the album that not only encapsulates the feeling of Southern California, where the sisters hail from, but also their unbreakable bond and their journey back to the limelight all these years later. The album features production from Yves Rothman, with a touch of the ’70s yet something so distinct and refreshing that there’s no one to whom Aly & AJ can be compared.
On creating the upcoming album, the sisters share: “We weirdly held an unnatural confidence over the recording & writing process this year (even when things would start and stop given all of the Covid shutdowns). It was like we were meant to make this music regardless of the world falling into the abyss because it was the record we were always born to make.”
On March 10, the sisters are set to perform single “Listen!!!” on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee at 10:30 ET on TBS. The show appearance follows last week’s release of “Pretty Places,” an indie-pop dream that tackles the idea of escaping the repetitiveness of the past year of COVID-19 and both finding and relishing in what makes us feel OK once again.
Last week’s release was the first of 2021 for the sisters, following the wildest year for them in recent memory. After the resurgence of their anthemic “Potential Breakup Song” thanks to TikTok, Aly & AJ released an explicit version of it. That pleasant surprise followed up their acclaimed singles “Joan of Arc on the Dance Floor” and “Attack of Panic,” which appeared on their compilation album, We Don’t Stop, that features tracks from Ten Years and Sanctuary, their 2017 and 2019 EPs, respectively.
A comeback is no easy feat, but Aly & AJ have made it look effortless. There’s no doubt the sisters would never have left mainstream attention after the release of the ever-iconic “Potential Breakup Song” all the way back in 2007, but this resurgence proves they’re meant to stay at least a while longer. Their new album is bound to be one of the biggest and best of the year, so keep on the lookout for more from the sisters, whose music is aging like a fine wine.
