Jamie Tworkowski, founder of To Write Love On Her Arms [a non-profit organization that benefits those who struggle with mental illness, self-harm and substance abuse], also a New York Times Best Seller of “If You Feel Too Much”, has launched Needs An Ocean last week. Needs An Ocean is a surf-inspired brand that serves as Jamie’s love for the sea which was inspired by his recent move to Nashville.

The brand is Jamie’s return to his surfing roots since moving from Melbourne Beach, Florida, to Nashville, Tennessee. He grew up near the ocean where that’s all he’s known for his whole life. His parents owned a surf shop when he was a child, and now he is following close to their footsteps, as he also worked for the surfer brand Hurley before he established TWLOHA.

“I told myself that after hardly surfing at all in recent years, I would be okay without it. I would do my best to let it go. But something happened in the distance. Maybe it was the time and space to think about my story. Maybe it was that I could no longer take the ocean for granted. I ended up falling back in love. On recent trips to Florida, I’ve been surfing almost every day, doing the drive from my parents’ house in Indialantic to Sebastian Inlet, where I grew up surfing. Letting it go made me realize it’s a part of me,” Jamie shared about his recent relocation.

The brand will be supporting three non-profit organizations: Gideon’s Army, Equal Justice Initiative, and Waves For Hope. For each hat and shirt sold from Needs An Ocean, $1 will be donated in support of one of the three non-profits. It is a total 360 for Jamie, because not only is he returning to his surfing roots, but he is also creating a brand unique enough for people who love the ocean but cannot experience it on a daily basis – where he would also love to bring surf culture to his new home in Nashville.

A surfer moves to Nashville.
A breakup instead becomes a long-distance relationship.
A love letter to the Sea.
A fantastic solution.
A beach brand born from a new appreciation.
