The Bicycle Thief has announced a special way to celebrate their debut album’s 21st anniversary in the form of vinyl full of exclusive goodies. Starting today, You Come And Go Like A Pop Song will be available for pre-order before it’s final unveil – 21 years to the day – on September 21, 2020, via Immediate Family Records.
This cult classic album comes from the minds of former Red Hot Chili Peppers Guitarist, Josh Klinghoffer, and Thelonious Monster frontman Bob Forrest. Despite Bob Forrest having a bit of a notorious reputation within the music world for his heavy partying ways, he found his way to a then 17-year old Josh Klinghoffer – a talented guitarist in his own right. In 1999, the newly clean Forrest enlisted in the help of Klinghoffer to help use his new sober perspective to create something worth remembering. With the help of producers Josh Blum and Marc Hutner, You Come And Go Like A Pop Song soon became wildly celebrated amongst fans and critics alike. Commended for its raw and vulnerable lyrics, matched youthful and hypnotic rhythms – the album solidified Forrest’s known talent and put Klinghoffer on the radar of those who he admired.
So after 21 years of rocking out to this iconic part of rock history – why now? Well, that answer comes from record label owner, Chris Pizzolo, who just so happened to be watching the Keira Bahruth directed documentary, Bob and The Monster. “I remember my first time experiencing that album as a teenager and how much it meant to me, but as the years went on that record became a distant memory. After watching the documentary, I went to listen to the album and to my disbelief I couldn’t find it anywhere. That’s when I knew I needed to do something. I hit up Bob on a whim through Instagram, and asked him if he’d be into doing a vinyl reissue and he just said ‘sure’ and here we are,” Pizzolo remembers fondly.
With this release being a [slightly more than] 2-decade celebration, of course, this vinyl had to be packed with some collectible goods. Each limited edition vinyl will include the original 1999 version of You Come And Go Like A Pop Song in a color-in-color vinyl, with a bonus 7” yellow vinyl that contains two songs from the 2001 Artemis Records reissue version of the album, and a download card which provides access to 24-never before released rarities including 2 studio recordings. Each vinyl will be individually numbered in a special foil numbering for authenticity and will include a gatefold cover, two-sided poster, and liner notes provided by each member of the band.
When thinking about the album, Josh Klinghoffer said, “In some ways it feels like it’s been 50 years since we made this, and in other ways it feels like it was just yesterday.” Meanwhile, Bob Forrest is dead set on officially bringing the band back together sharing, “We’re going to play somehow. Stay tuned, cause there’s going to be a concert – somehow.” The link for the pre-sale to own a copy of this iconic album on vinyl is linked below – but as you wait for your record needle to grace the grooves of this incredible release, reminisce on the good ole’ days or fall in love for the first time as you listen to You Come And Go Like A Pop Song below.
