Valentine’s Day is here and everyone is getting in the Valentine’s Day mood whether it be being in love, going through a break-up, getting over someone, the feeling of being lonely or just waiting for the chocolate to go on sale tomorrow. This ultimate Valentine’s Day playlist has a song for every Valentines’ mood.
Most people think of love songs when they see a Valentine’s Day playlist, but we made sure to have this be a healthy mix of all the in’s and out’s of everything love-related. With a wide range of genres and different mood-setters, you will most likely find the song that best fits your mood on the national day of love and overpriced chocolate. As far as love songs go, “Dreams” by Luxtides speaks words of true emotion right from the heart. With the lyrics “You’re the ocean on the warmest day / And a hand on the hardest / Quiet in your calm, will you stay / A moon in the darkness,” listeners gain a sense of love that the New York native, Danni Bouchard (Luxtides), is expressing through her music. This is a great song for anyone who is in love and doesn’t care who knows it.
Yet not everyone feels the stereotypical feelings of love on this holiday. Commonly, people often are reminded of a break-up that hurt them to the core – Sam DeRosa’s song “Pill For This”, which premiered on NBC’s Songland back in October of 2019, was written after a harsh break-up from her boyfriend, and her best friend. Her lyrics “If there’s some medication, I could take / To make me wanna hate you, and kill this headache / If there’s some medication, I could take / You know I would do it / But they don’t got a pill for this,” cuts deep and perfectly embodies what it’s like to have your heart broken into pieces. “Pill For This” is obviously one of the more genuine and raw break up songs on this playlist and seriously underrated.
Getting over a break up from someone that changed the way you look at love is one of the more challenging obstacles people have to face – which is what the artist Lauv depicts perfectly in his song “Getting Over You.” “Waking up in a cold sweat / Someone else in this cold bed / I’d do anything to not be alone / All alone with the ceiling / All alone with this feeling / And I wonder if I’ll ever let go.” These lyrics written by Ari Leff (Lauv) explain his time being spent with other, seemingly random, girls to try and forget about his ex – a common tactic used among broken hearts.
Another theme found in this Valentine’s Day playlist is sex. Hook-up culture is very commonly expressed in music – and judging by how many Scorpios we have in the world, clearly this holiday gets people a little more than feisty. In Southernwade’s song “Temptation”, the lyrics indicate he is seeing a girl who feeds him sexual temptation. This is one of the more sexy songs on this playlist for anyone who is looking for a new song to get them and their partner in the mood.
But this holiday isn’t just about sex or getting over a break up – it’s about celebrating your partner for who they are and what made you fall for them in the first place. Theory Of A Deadman’s “Bad Girlfriend” is the ultimate ‘partner brag’ – frontman, Tyler Connolly, wrote this song about his then wife, Christine Danielle Connolly, highlighting not only his attraction to her but her general badass-ness. As you make your way through our playlist, it’s important to remember to always celebrate your partner not just on February 14th, but everyday – boast about them, show them off, encourage them – they’ll love you more for it.
One of the more fun tracks on this list is All Time Low‘s “Toxic Valentine“. This track was featured on the soundtrack for the horror flick, Jennifer’s Body, back in 2009 – a wildly underrated track from the pop-punk band. They haven’t graced the stage with this song in 10 years but now that the guys have been digging deep in their discography vault perhaps fans will hear it live again soon.
And finally, “Valentine” by 5 Seconds of Summer and “2/14” by The Band CAMINO had to be included because a Valentine’s Day playlist wouldn’t be a Valentine’s Day playlist without songs about the actual day!
Happy Valentine’s Day to all who listen – or Happy Almost 50% Chocolate Day
