REVIEW: Annie O’malley Unveils Debut EP ‘GOLDEN’

Annie O’malley golden

Annie O’malley, a 19-year old productive songwriter and a multi-instrumentalist, has released her debut EP Golden. In the EP, she wrote every lyric from her heart and conveyed emotion with a level of personal attention and understanding that is beyond her years. Annie covered topics such as loneliness, self-betterment, and love on this record. Annie’s debut EP is nothing short of flawless. She took negative experiences and made them into positive attitudes. She knew from a young age that she wanted to be a musician and Golden is a collection of all her artistry up to right now.

Speaking on the importance of Golden, Annie O’malley said, “I want people to know that we don’t have to have all the answers so quickly and we don’t need to force ourselves to be happy when we’re not. Just take life one day at a time. There’s so much pressure today. I try to alleviate some of that. I just hope everyone knows that it’s okay to feel through everything.”

Annie’s songs are raw, honest, intimate, and tell a story. Her latest single and first track on the EP “Mrs. Nice” utilizes enthralling piano chords and a powerful beat as she wonders what it would be like to break the rules and fight for what she wants. The calm, happy track “Golden Doves” contains wonderful songwriting, warm and exciting vocals, and great pick-me-up instrumentation from everything from the drumbeat to guitar riffs – this track creates an angelic atmosphere. The “Golden Doves” video invites the viewer to slow down, breathe in, and find tranquility while Annie showcases her mesmerizing voice.

The third track of the EP “Island” was penned during a time of confusion and frustration in Annie’s life. The up-tempo melodies and her grandiose vocal performance make for a beautifully confident tune. The ethereal “Island” video follows Annie gliding around an island as she develops and gains the confidence to be herself, a journey mirroring her own as the young musician grows into her own creative space where she has found a voice all her own.

In the track “You’re The Drug,” we hear Annie’s catchy, beautiful voice. The pure and delightful vocals are what make the song a gem. The lyrics are originally gorgeous, and the overall performance is very professional. The melodies of this track are unique, and the piano tune is totally a hook. The last track on Golden is “Planet Golden.” The “Planet Golden” video captures a behind-the-scenes look at Annie performing the song live, showcases her playful personality, and is a contrast to the song’s lyrical space theme, sparse piano, and swelling guitar chords.

Annie O’malley first garnered attention in 2018 with her independently released the single “Chase Me Down,” which has organically collected over 200,000 Spotify streams and caught the attention of producer Johnny K [3 Doors Down, Plain White T’s], who produced her debut EP. Annie’s voice forges an immediate bond with listeners whether independently racking up hundreds of thousands of streams or bringing a diverse crowd of 20,000 to its feet when she was selected to open for the legendary Chicago.

Annie says this about her music, “I’m as honest and real as possible. I’m like anybody listening to me. I feel just as deeply as you do: I get upset, I’m not happy all the time, I make mistakes, and I can be angry. I create intense songs because I love to watch real emotions. For me, music is about making other people happy.
