EP REVIEW: Maddox Jones Invites You Into His ‘HEADSPACE’

Maddox Jones Drops Debut EP “HEADSPACE”

Maddox Jones Headspace review

UK based singer/songwriter Maddox Jones recently released his vibrant debut EP, Headspace. The five-track release, which dropped on July 10th, is a bright and refreshing delivery of honest verses and strong vocals.

“Headspace” is the perfect title track for the EP – encompassing the room whether you’re listening with headphones or speakers, the song is cathartic and will make you want to drive with the windows down and sing. Jones sings about connection and emotional intimacy with lyrics, “Come into my headspace/ let me into yours.” Jones collaborated with close friend and producer Dave Crawford on the track – the dynamic duo wrote, recorded, and produced it all in one day. When discussing the song, he explains that the synth-washed pop track is about “meaningful connection and the deep, true, unconditional love we are all yearning for.”

The second track, “My House,” is a true pop anthem.  Co-written with Dave Crawford and produced by former Daytona Lights’, Louis Souyave, the track is as complex in style as the entire EP.  Jones sings, “I just need a whiskey to drink with my cigarette and talk about everything or nothing/ I’m thinking out loud, thinking out loud, thinking out loud…” The track, which explores Jones’ experiences in adulthood, sets the scene on inviting strangers over for an afterparty.  Discussing the track, Jones says, “It has an anthemic vibe, it’s a song that should be sung in beer soaked festival fields. It’s a story about inviting strangers over for an afterparty, metaphorically and literally exploring the hedonistic joy found in reckless habits.”

“More Than This” – the Stranger Things inspired track – will definitely take you to The Upside Down. The lyrics are just as nostalgic as the show it was inspired by as Jones sings, “We have big dreams, where are they now? We were meant for more than this.” Written with close friend and rising pop artist Adal, the synth-pop track “searches for reconnection with the forgotten dreams and endless possibilities of youth,” explains Jones.

“Dancing Feels Good” stands out with its funky guitar and bass, making listeners want to get up and dance along. The song, “explores an inner battle over that someone or something that you know is bad for you, but sometimes feels too good to resist,” says Jones. The track makes you want to lose yourself in the music just as the lyrics suggest.

The final track, “No More Ghosts,” is a somewhat cool yet emotional breakup ballad. With a moving chorus, the song is “a heartfelt and haunting goodbye, finally making peace and letting go of something or someone that has been a major part of your life. It was inspired by a scene in the Netflix series You where Joe Goldberg says, ‘There’s no more ghosts in this bed.’” Jones tells. It’s the perfect closer for the EP.

This is Maddox Jones’ release as a solo artist, having previously been the frontman of the band Born Stranger. With such a complex EP, Maddox Jones is bound to make waves, and we can’t wait to see what comes next.
