With the world in a tailspin and the music industry in a panic – sometimes it’s hard to feature everything we want to when it’s first released. But as they say, the internet is forever and since Throw Back Thursday is basically a worldwide holiday – we love taking a look back at all the things we may have missed or just want to relive because it was just that damn good the first time. This week’s Throw Back Thursday features pop-punk legends, our favorite disasters, some young bucks, and familiar faces under a new disguise. There’s no time to waste, so let’s get right to it.
All Time Low has been at the forefront in how to survive quarantine. From countless live sessions across social media and leaking their own album, to creating a heavily demanded Rosé for their #EverythingIsWine line, to creating collective acoustic renditions of our favorite tracks off their latest album, Wake Up, Sunshine – All Time Low is not going to let quarantine get them down. With all the members of ATL scattered across the US, the guys had to get creative when it came to creating music together – of course, we all love their group Twitch lives and their individual Instagram lives, but something about your favorite band releasing acoustic versions of your favorite tracks just feeds the soul. ATL had previously released “Sleeping In” and “Glitter and Crimson” in the same manner – but with the release of their Summer Daze Rosé it only seemed fitting to debut the ‘acoustic in quarantine’ “Summer Daze” which All Time Low notes in their Facebook post, “It’s out, it’s cute, and it’s actually just one big wine ad…”
With summer days seemingly dragging on into a summer haze, we were in need of a solid bump from an old favorite. girlfriends are the side project from the mind of hip hop artist, Travis Mills [previously T. Mills] and Nick Gross. With not much new music in the last few years from Mills, fans began to wonder if their favorite tatted-up artist had completely moved on from the music world. Over the last few years, Travis Mills had been turned onto the world of tv. Having guest-starred in NBC’s Good Girls, being a regular on eko’s The Coop, to even being the co-host of MTV’s Ghosted – Travis was quickly gaining his footing in front of the camera as a character but fans still held out hope that Travis would be back dropping tracks soon. In June, Mills revealed an intimate transcript to worried fans that read in part – “3 or 4 years ago I walked away from music. I was depressed, scared, ashamed and I felt defeated. The thing that I loved since I was a kid started feeling like a job. It all began to feel so transactional….The more I pushed the more I lost….I was blessed to have found other opportunities outside of being an artist that allowed me to be creative, feel validated and create a new life for myself…But none of it came close to being on stage in front of the people who supported me from day one. You never gave up on me and I could never say thank you enough. This time away showed me everything I did wrong and how I could do it right if I had another chance. Sometime you have to let go of the things you love and if they come back to you they were always meant for you….This is for you, this is for me, this is for all of us.” And with that, we were given girlfriends and their first single “California”.
Pop-punk legends, New Found Glory always come through with the bangers. While they are still riding the high of their tenth studio album, Fever + Ever x Infinity, New Found Glory had been giving fans some acoustic renditions of their favorite songs off the album and some behind the scenes footage into what it took to make some a monumental album. They of course had to release some music videos to match up with these killer tracks – “Stay Awhile” becomes the first of assumed many music videos to grace our screens. This fun, lighthearted video really zeros in on the whole premise of the album is a place of remembering who they are as a band. Guitarist, Chad Gilbert had this to say on the album itself, “This is the record our fans have been waiting for us to make. The old now feels new and fresh. It was a blast finding ourselves again.” The video features a young adolescent just trying to catch some Zzz’s before being woken up by the blaring punk noise below him – trying [and failing] to cover the glorious sounds of NFG, it’s not long before our young punkster is jamming out in his room. But as any OG New Found Glory fan can tell you, listening to them in your room isn’t nearly half as good as seeing them live – and what better way to experience NFG then hunting down the music to rock out in person. While our young heroine may have missed the chance to see these Punk legends in person, at least he was introduced to one of the best bands around and the second-best way to listen to tunes.
Finally, we have to talk about the new kids on the block, CHIEF. Back in April, this 4 piece collective released their single “No Cares” and you really can’t worry about anything when this is playing. It’s bouncy synths with feel-good lyrics instantly let all the bad roll off your shoulders. “Just let go, nothing left here to see. Don’t you know we got no where to be” – needs to immediately become the catchphrase of 2020. With still so many out of work due to the pandemic, daily responsibilities can easily pile up and get the better of us to the point where we just freeze from an overhaul of emotions. It’s important – especially now- that we learn to let go and live free [as free as one can be in quarantine that is]. The positivity that illuminates from this track is almost blinding – there’s a saying “If you can’t fix it or change it in 10 seconds – don’t mention it” and with so much happening in the world right now that’s out of our control that can be hard to remember. But with a song like “No Cares”, letting go just got a hell of a lot easier.
