Another week, another highlight – rediscover your favorite tunes

Throwback Thursday Ashnikko Super Whatevr Devon Werkheir Bring Me The Horizon

Sometimes there’s just so much good music we can never get to it all. Sometimes we love it so much we want you to hear it again. Regardless of our reasoning, we have yet another Throw Back Thursday full of incredible tunes. This week features a music video that transports you to a futuristic, post-apocalyptic world, a legendary collab with a pop-punk icon, the latest EP from our favorite school guide survivalist and a track that has us feeling a little infested – there’s no time to waste so let’s dive on in.

Last month, viral rap star, Ashnikko, released her music video for her song Cry  featuring Grimes. This Evanescence-inspired track houses a fully animated video takes you on a wild journey through the mind of Ashnikko with Grimes as her otherworldly fairy Godmother. Captured as a 3-headed goth superhuman, Ashnikko stalks the worn-out streets of a desolate wasteland, tracking the prey who dared to make her cry. We get sucked into the story of Ashnikko being abandoned in deep space, heartbroken and betrayed by a friend who messed around with a past partner of hers. When our fairy queen, Grimes, finds our broken Ashnikko seemingly in empty space, she recreates her – stronger, giving her the extra push [and heads] she needs to take down the enemy. While the track originally starting as a joke, it’s turned into one of her most-watched videos to date – garnering over 2.8 million views in just over a month.

Indie Alternative act, Super Whatevr released their brilliant collaboration with Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus. Carhartts & Converse  may have hit airwaves on July 10, but we can not stop bumping this feel-good track. This breezy single is perfect for any overworked day or even just a going on a ride through town. On working with the legendary Mark Hoppus, vocalist, Skyler McKee shares, Y’all ever dream of creating art with someone you revere and respect? Yeah, I got to do that with Mark Hoppus. I wanted to make a song about courage and strength amidst people trying to put you down. A song about loving yourself for what you’re worth rather than what others say about you. Mark was an amazing person to work with because he’s so open to facilitating these conversations, and he’s just a badass songwriter in general. Enjoy the tune in your clothes that make you feel the most confident and don’t let anyone tell you that you’re worth anything less.

Post-hardcore legends, Bring Me The Horizon released the official music video for their heavy track, Parasite Eve  at the end of June. After using much of the lockdown to write and create – BMTH has collectively agreed to release four new records over the course of this next year, all labeled Post Human. Frontman, Oliver Sykes shared the original thought behind this Post Human project in an interview with NME, The idea behind ‘Post Human’ is looking at how we’ve stepped out of evolution and the food chain. If we can do that, then we can take responsibility for what we’ve done to the planet and become something better than what humans are right now.  The video features the band being overcome by an unknown parasite, transforming each of them into horrible creatures. The repeated warning to please, remain calm, the end has arrived. We cannot save you, enjoy the ride  is reminiscent of Resident Evil’s Red Queen who similarly warns you’re all going to die down here.  With us as humans constantly at a war against each other fighting over whether or not our planet is actually dying, verses trying to spend all our energy trying to save it – we seem to be headed towards a Resident Evil themed Parasite Eve.

Finally, we have the latest EP release from actor and musician Devon Werkheiser. Previously released in April, Chapter One EP brings forth the next step in this budding musician’s career. Devon Werkheiser may be best known for his work as an actor starring in Nickelodeon’s hit series, Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide – but over the last decade, he’s been trying his hand at music. This 5 track ensemble features our trusted school guide survivalist in a new light with vocals that emulates that of James Blunt [You’re Beautiful] and Daniel Powter [Bad Day]. This feel-good rock album feels like the perfect backing to a cross country trip for starting over – wanting to escape it all. While we haven’t gotten any new tips on how to survive this next chapter in life outright – perhaps Chapter One is Devon’s latest way in delivering the guidance we all so desperately crave.
