It’s Thursday once again which means we are taking the time to highlight all the things we missed the first time around. This week’s Throwback Thursday is sponsored in part by distractions – when you need to get stuff done but there’s too many cat videos to watch on TikTok. This week we take a look at an overly relatable track for overwhelming times, a different take on presenting high hopes, a rising indie star and a trio who covered one of Post Malone’s most celebrated songs for a good cause.

On September 11, Eric Dash excitedly shared his latest single and music video, “I Just Need To Get Away.” A return to his roots of 90s inspired rock anthems, he mixes his keen production skills with his intimate lyrical storytelling. As a man of many talents, he wrote, performed, produced and engineered “I Just Need To Get Away” with one goal in mind: to create a rock record that fits in the intensely complex modern musical landscape of 2020. The track is the first of several singles to be released this upcoming fall.

Mixed by Adam Hawkins [Twenty One Pilots, K.Flay, Alanis Morissette] and mastered by Chris Gehringer [Halsey, Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey], the song is grounded in Dash’s love for 90s bands like Everclear, Fountains of Wayne, Weezer, Nirvana and Jimmy Eat World.

In 2012, Dash was discovered by notable producer Jack Joseph Puig [John Mayer/Black Crowes/Weezer]. Dash and Puig worked together for 5 years, releasing singles like “One More Love Song” which reached the Nielsen Top 40 Radio Chart. “I don’t know how to follow trends. That’s not inspiring to me whatsoever. But to do something different and still be accepted…that’s what I want. To be accepted as I am.”

Earlier this month, Pennsylvania rock band, From Ashes To New released their cover of Panic! At The Disco’s platinum single, “High Hopes” – quarantine edition. Created as part of Octane Home Invasion Festival present by SiriusXMFrom Ashes To New made performing from lockdown look way too easy. Opening the song with a hard rock rendition of the now iconic melody, From Ashes To New shared in the caption of their video, “Our newest “Quarantine Cover” with a FATN twist! Recording remotely definitely has its challenges and is a lot different than having the luxury of a studio. Loved putting this one together for you….enjoy!” Nothing could prepared fans for an intense rap verse that flows elegantly over a song that has brought on so many good vibes since its release in its original form.

Despite much of the music industry still living in a land of limbo, artists and bands alike have refused to let even a pandemic stop them from creating masterpieces. Breakout indie artist, Danny Goo released a breathtaking music video for his single, “So In Love” featuring Lil Lotus just a few weeks ago. In the perfectly raw track, Danny strips down to his most vulnerable belting, “I don’t wanna be by myself / I’ll just lay here while your feeling someone else / And i know its all my fault / I was young so dumb i couldn’t help myself.”

Opening with the lyrics “all by myself”, that seemingly play tribute to Celine Dion’s iconic, “All By Myself”Danny isn’t afraid to show his emotions. Shaken to his core, the track highlights the overwhelming struggle of being in a one-sided battle against your feelings of pain and loneliness – feelings that Goo found himself completely engulfed in after an intense breakup. While the single showcases Goo’s real life pain, it also tips its hat to the process in which he learned to love himself again. Lil Lotus’s closing verse is draped in a techno tone that brings us back to the days of MySpace music in the most blissful way. The styling choice reminds us that as we work through today’s pain, it’s important to look back on all the great things that surrounded the bad in order for us to find peace for the future.

On the track Danny shares, “A breakup is like shattered glass, you can try to put all the pieces back together, but there will always be pieces that are lost, just out of sight, leaving you with an incomplete version of what you once had. ‘So In Love’ is about the pain and uncertainty that came with disconnecting from someone I cared about on a deep level, while also coming to terms with the fact that they’d already moved on.”

“So In Love” comes off of Goo’s forthcoming EP, Feel For You, due out later this year. The project will play out as a six-song confessional detailing the rise and fall of a romantic relationship. Produced by longtime collaborator JoJo Centineo, the EP is a dreamy mishmash of classic pop-rock and neo-soul.

While September produced some killer gems, August featured a few shining stars of its own. In troubling times, music has the power to bring people together. After a breakout year in 2019, alternative band, Charming Liars, decided to use their platform to do just that. In response to a massive explosion in Lebanon, the band decided to donate all the proceeds from their cover of Post Malone’s “Circles to relief organizations. Some of these organizations include Lebanese Red Cross, Impact Lebanon, Saint George Hospital Beirut, among others. The band has a strong connection with Lebanon and the tragedy with their guitarist, Karnig Manoukian, being of Lebanese Armenian descent.

The band isn’t finished using their platform for change. In a recent Instagram post, the band said, We’ve been able to raise money to donate to very important initiatives and causes in Lebanon. The push is not over yet and we aim to spread the word even more. Thousands of people are still suffering from the disaster on August 4th and it’ll be a long time until things get better.” Their tremendous effort is being recognized, not only by their friends, but by other artists. Sir Elton John and Serj Tankian [System Of a Down] have helped to promote the efforts of Charming Liars
