Violet Night Rise Against Atreyu Terrell Hines Throwback Thursday
Words in part by: Joseph Guzman [Terrell Hines]

Another week, another Thursday – this heat has everyone on edge, and with everyone getting less patient as lockdowns and restrictions get reinstated, we turn to music to help bring us some release. This week’s Throwback Thursday features some delightful Antiheroes, punk rock legends, an outspoken Georgia native, and post-hardcore collaboration for the ages. As Friday closes in on us, let’s get down to it.

Hailing from the super north, Canada, Violet Night has been turning heads since they arrived. While still relatively new to the scene, Violet Night has been gaining traction as they gear up for their sophomore album, A N T I H E R O E S. While the leading single, freak me up,  was released last August, the follow up single, evergreen,  made its debut just a few weeks ago. With a smooth opening into this fluid track, the momentum is a gradual build with bursts of energy. The chorus comes alive that flows into mellowed out verses creating a unique listening experience, making evergreen”  an instant repeat hit. On July 10, Violet Night released the official music video for this transcendent track, that delivers the immersive trip down a kaleidoscope-like wonderment.

On July 16, punk-rock legends, Rise Against delivered an expanded edition of their 2014 release, The Black Market. Throughout their career, Rise Against has been one of the loudest voices in the industry to speak out against any wrongdoings in the world – from the environment to immigration to gun control to be a generally good person, Rise Against have always made their opinions known. Yet with the release of The Black Market, frontman, Tim McIlrath, elected to have introspection as the major theme of the album. Initially, the album focused on the role of Rise Against for himself and the listeners – yet as the creating process continued, it evolved to focus heavily on personal experiences, which Tim described as a cathartic experience.  He continued, saying, So the silver lining was how you deal with it. It was a form of therapy, and what I wanted to do on this album was confront all of it.”  The Black Market marked their seventh studio album, sparking the question amongst the members, what else can we say, that we haven’t said before?  The expanded edition features 3 additional tracks, Escape Artists, About Damn Time”, and We Will Never Forget.

All the way back in April, hardcore collective, Atreyu released the official music video for their track Superhero. The track hails from the band’s seventh studio album, In Our Wake, and features vocals from two of the scene’s most iconic groups. Underoath’s, Aaron Gillespie, and Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows join forces with Atreyu to deliver one of the most heartfelt tracks from their discography. The video came during a time when the world was in full lockdown, and the overwhelming stresses of being a parent were more present than ever. In a Facebook post, Atreyu shared, Our song ‘Super Hero’ was written about what it’s like to be a parent and the vast amount of time, effort, energy, and hard work it takes to be a real-life superhero for your children. The song also has a broader meaning, especially given the current situation the entire world is dealing with. There are many superheroes out there who appear in many forms — namely the first responders, medical personnel, and health care workers who are putting others first as they work to fight COVID-19 and to save lives. We dedicate this song to them.”  Super Hero  brings on all the feels like the video highlights each member’s families as they balance life as a touring musician in addition to being a killer partner and a badass parent.

Georgia native, Terrell Hines released a remix edition of his percussion filled, fast-paced, anti-government anthem, “Get Up”. With the track’s original release at the end of last year, the reimagined version comes from a place of urgency as tensions between the US government and its citizen ring higher than ever. Joined by rapper, Vince Staples, Hines spoke on what this collab meant for the music, “It’s always good to get a vision out with other artists who want to live in a created space outside of the design we are currently in, I couldn’t have gotten a better collab than Vince Staples. I’ve always enjoyed and respected his work. He brought a certain energy to the record that only he could bring.”  The duo feeds off each other, delivering impassioned performances over a guitar plucking beat, lined with claps and drums that fill out the rest of the instrumental.
