TikTokTues: ‘Vices’ By Mothica Catches The Attention Of TikTok Users
The world-famous app, TikTok, has provided people with entertainment across so many genres such as comedy, eye candy, witchery, psychology, dancing, music, and so much more. The app is so big and somehow controversial, that it’s on its way to being banned in the U.S, and has already been banned in other countries in the past like India. TikTok has also started careers for young creators and musicians, providing a platform to post their art with hopes of garnering attention.
After releasing music for six years, and downloading TikTok to pass the time in quarantine, Oklahoma-bred and Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter, Mothica, got a big break when her single “Vices” blew up on the app in late June.
Mothica had filmed a short video of herself, using TikTok, listening to her albums’ masters which had featured the now-viral single. Although the video is short, users of the infamous app connected to the catchy tune, and the rest is history. The video, to date, has nearly five million views and over 4.5 million streams on Spotify since the song’s release on June 26.
The track garnered attention from influencers like David Dobrik, which encouraged Mothica to release the song earlier than intended. But due to the sudden, copious amounts of attention on the song, Mothica had no artwork chosen for the single, so she felt underprepared for the sudden demand, but within days of its release, “Vices” sat just outside the iTunes top 10.
“Vices” is incredibly authentic, writing it two months into getting sober “...this ones about getting addicted to anything,” her TikTok caption read. Mothica admitted that she replaced drinking with Tinder hookups, dating apps, binge eating, and other distractions – especially caffeine. The hunger to escape her detrimental behaviors is captured in the chorus with “If it’s not drugs it’s drinks, if it’s not drinks it’s things.”
Along with the release of “Vices,” Mothica had ventured back to her hometown of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to shoot a mini-documentary and album trailer Blue Hour, revisiting her childhood. The documentary includes home videos and heartfelt confessions, but her message is that there is always hope to find. And what she found was creating her new record Blue Hour due out later this year.
